TRANSFIGURATION
OF THE LORD
August 5/6, 2006

Who needs to be reminded that he/she is beloved of God?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 9:2-10): In this reading, Jesus takes his apostles Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There, he is transfigured before them. He shows them the glory that is his as the only-begotten Son of God. With Jesus are the Old Testament prophets, Moses and Elijah.
Peter can hardly believe his eyes. He wants to do something to commemorate this wonderful event. He suggests that they build three tents there! He wanted to mark this spot as holy. Then, from heaven, the voice of the Father was heard: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, all was still. They looked up, and there was Jesus, alone with them. Then he prepared them for his death and resurrection.
It is important to remember that this event happened just before the passion and death of Jesus. This was a special gift to the apostles, so that they would remember that Jesus, their teacher and friend, was also their Lord, their Savior, and the Son of God.
Long after this event, Peter wrote about it in his first letter. How did he suggest we commemorate this event? Not by building tents on holy ground, but by paying attention to the message of Christ, by listening to the Son of God.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Peter’s impulse to mark this spot of encounter with Jesus was not wrong. It is a very human instinct. Our churches and shrines are “holy ground” for us. When we make a prayer corner at home or at school, we are setting aside “holy ground.” Does this holy ground help you to be aware of God’s presence? Does this holy ground help you to listen to Christ? How?
Why didn’t Jesus and the apostles stay on the mountain? Why did they come down? What do you think?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

Transfiguration of the Lord

The two titles applied to Jesus in today's Gospel point to dimensions of his person and his mission. Each is useful to provide strength to us at specific moments in our lives. Both as transcendent Lord and as God's agent on earth, Jesus supports us as his disciples.

Adults: Which title of Jesus from today's Gospel most speaks to me at this time?

Children: How might I show my love for Jesus in my actions this week?

RESPECT LIFE
A frequently heard claim contends that embryonic stem cells "are, at present, the most useful kind of cells for medical research." This advocacy flies in the face of the fact that not one successful therapy has been developed using embryonic stem cells while stem cells from morally acceptable sources are producing positive therapeutic cells for a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Letter to the Editor by Mark Hartman, 3/15/05, San Diego Union-Tribune.
DIVORCE CARE MINISTRY (DCM)
This ministry is now available in Southeastern Ohio, with weekly support meetings beginning in late August. DCM, formerly the North American Conference for Separated and Divorced Catholics (www.nacsdc.org), has been in operation since 1974 with the approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. All acknowledge that the Church has a rich treasury of people, scripture, tradition, and pastoral ministry on which it can draw to serve its members whose marriages end in divorce.
The goal of Divorce Care Ministry is to lay open this wealth and make known Christ’s abundant love so that all who suffer from separation and divorce might experience healing, reconciliation, and new life. Participants will utilize the highly respected DivorceCare support program (www.divorcecare.org), which is designed for anyone currently experiencing separation or divorce, as well as those who have been divorced for years.
Weekly meetings will be held at St. Paul’s Parish in Athens beginning in late August. Please contact either Brian or Dawn McCarthy at 740-707-9017 or 740-707-1342, respectively, for more information.
