"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

19TH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
August 12/13, 2006

Describe the place of bread in your life. How is Jesus your bread?
Gospel Reflection (John 6:41-51): When a teacher introduces a completely new idea, students sometimes resist it. They may complain “I don’t get it. It doesn’t make sense to me.” When Jesus began teaching the Jews that he himself was the “bread that came down from heaven,” they muttered and murmured in complaint. They thought they knew who Jesus was. But Jesus responds by promising them that if they eat the living bread, they will live forever. He will give his flesh for the life of the world.    In the Eucharist, we experience the truth of Jesus’ promise. We receive the living bread and know that we shall live forever.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Look back at the reading. What reasons do the murmurers give for not accepting Jesus’ teaching? What other reasons might they have? Why do you sometimes find it hard to accept new teachings either in religion class or any other class? How does Jesus respond to those who are resisting his teaching?
What are some of the ways we can prepare to celebrate Eucharist so that we experience this sacrament more fully? How can we help other Catholics who may be staying away from Mass for any reason?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus challenges those who are listening to him to believe that he can satisfy their deepest hungers with "bread from heaven" that he alone can give. As you go about your routine this week, ask yourself:

Adults: How does the reality of the way I live my everyday life demonstrate that I truly believe Jesus alone can fill the deepest longings of my heart?

Children: What does it mean that when I receive Holy Communion, it is Jesus, the Bread of life, who I am receiving?
FATHER MARTY'S VACATION

Father Marty will be on vacation from Wednesday, August 16th through Thursday, August 24th so there will be no daily Masses during that time. We will have our regular weekend Masses with one of our retired diocesan priests her to celebrate them.
Any requested daily Masses that have been scheduled during the week Father Marty will be gone will, of course, be rescheduled as soon as possible. Please check the bulletin for the rescheduled day and time.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The Feast of the Assumption celebrates the Catholic belief that, at the end of her life, Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin,” states the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians.”
Like other Church teachings about Mary, the Assumption is based upon Mary’s unique relationship to Jesus and his redemptive mission. At the time of the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel greeted Mary as “full of grace” (Luke 1:28). The Church has come to understand that God specially prepared Mary to be the mother of Jesus. “Full of grace” at the Annunciation, Mary had been preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception.
This is the dogma of the Immaculate Conception: In order to prepare her for her role in bearing the Son, Mary was given the special privilege of experiencing in advance the merits her Son would gain through the Redemption.
In the same way, through the Assumption, Mary was allowed to enjoy the full benefits of the Redemption. As Christians, we look forward to that same glorification. Meanwhile, we benefit from Mary’s intercession on our behalf in heaven.

RESPECT LIFE
Kate Adamson was a 33-year old mother of two when she suffered a massive stroke, leaving her in a coma clinging to life. Doctors told her husband not to treat her, but he insisted on treatment for this "perfect candidate for mercy killing" who could hear the discussions of her death but was unable to speak. She not only survived but now travels the country speaking about the sacredness of all human life. The Pro-Life Reporter, Spring, 2006.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
"Who Do You Say I Am?" The 2006 Catechetical Sunday theme indicated that over 50 individuals offer thousands of hours to serve as teachers, aides, board members, tutors, teacher mentors, treasurer, Kroger Cards, set-up and clean-up, safety patrol, secretarial help and many other tasks in order to share their story with the children and households of our parishes. Join Us. Your life will be enriched by participating in the special ministry of passing on our faith. Jesus is our guide. We follow in His footsteps! We have many new and returning talented individuals to teach our young people, but we still need more to fill the 18 different classes offered on Tuesdays and Sundays. Teachers are needed for Sunday Fourth and Fifth grades and to lead the Junior High. We need a person to teach Tuesday for Third grade and to lead the Junior High. Classes begin Sunday, September 10, and Tuesday, September 12. Call Nancy Denhart for information, 594-8718 or 592-2711.

PARENTS
of children in grades Pre-K through eighth, please note the change in the Religious Education starting date. We begin classes in the newly-painted-and-carpeted Christ the King Parish Center on September 10 and 12, NOT August 27 and 29 as previously published. Registration packets are being sent to your home. Please return forms via the collection basket or mail to the parish office.
DIVORCE CARE MINISTRY (DCM)
is now available in Southeastern Ohio, with weekly support meetings beginning in late August at St. Paul's Parish. DCM, formerly the North American Conference for Separated and Divorced Catholics (www.nacsdc.org), has been in operation since 1974 with the approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. All acknowledge that the Church has a rich treasury of people, scripture, tradition, and pastoral ministry on which it can draw to serve its members whose marriages end in divorce.
The goal of Divorce Care Ministry is to lay open this wealth and make known Christ’s abundant love so that all who suffer from separation and divorce might experience healing, reconciliation, and new life. Participants will utilize the highly respected DivorceCare support program (www.divorcecare.org), which is designed for anyone currently experiencing separation or divorce, as well as those who have been divorced for years. Please contact either Brian or Dawn McCarthy at 740-707-9017 or 740-707-1342, respectively, for more information.

A special screening of the film The Great Warming - August 23 at Athens Public Library at 6:45 p.m. or September 14 at Christ the King Catholic Church at 7 p.m.
It has been called “the best film about global warming ever produced.” Narrated by Alanis Morissette and Keanu Reeves, The Great Warming is being shown around the world to reveal how a changing climate is affecting us all.
The Great Warming has been endorsed by the National Council of Churches, Evangelical Environmental Network, and the Coalition on Environment and Jewish Life.
