- TWENTIETH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
August 16/17, 2008
-
- Where does it hurt? How can
God heal the hurt?
-
- Gospel Reflection (Matthew 15:21-28):
In the gospel reading, Jesus meets
up with a very determined Canaanite woman who begs him to help
her troubled daughter. Since the woman was a Gentile, the apostles
wanted to send her away, but Jesus continued to speak with her.
Besides her great faith and courage, the woman also showed tremendous
love for her child. She was willing to risk rejection for breaking
through the barriers of convention to ask for help. She truly
believed that Jesus could help her daughter, and despite what
seemed like his initial reluctance, she simply wasnt going
to give up. She persisted, even begging him. Eventually Jesus
praised her undaunting faith and healed her daughter. Jesus
reply is one we would all love to hear: O woman, great
is your faith! Let it be done as you wish.
Discussion Points for Gospel: The Canaanite woman was
a marginalized person in the society of Jesus time, because
of her gender, her race, and her religious practice. Have you
ever experienced rejection because of your gender, race, or religion?
How did you deal with it? Have you ever been asked for help by
someone of another race or culture? How have you responded? How
are women in particular treated in todays society? Jesus
attitude towards the Canaanite woman is one that all should imitate,
his acceptance of her, as both a woman and a foreigner.

- Sunday Scripture Readings
- Reflection on the Scriptures has become
more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times
we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but
we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may
be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately
after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with
the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture
reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday.
In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual
links to the readings.

- QUESTIONS OF THE
WEEK
- Twentieth Sunday
of Ordinary time
-
- The Gospel narrative signals the beginning
of a new era based upon faith rather than adherence to the Law.
The woman courageously stepped out in faith moved by love and
compassion for her daughter. She was not a product of Jewish
Law and tradition. She merely loved enough to risk and persist
in her plea.
Adults: When has compassion for another moved me
beyond my comfort zone?
Children: When has my faith in Jesus helped me
to be courageous?

Are you a faith-filled person who loves children?
Perhaps you are being called to be a person who echoes
Gods Word as a catechist. The Religious Education
Program has openings for catechists at all grade levels (pre-K
through 8). We meet on Sundays at 12:15 or Tuesdays at 6:30 during
the school year. If you are interested and would like to know
more about how you can contribute, please contact Nancy Denhart,
Director of Religious Education 590-3302 or 592-2711 or ndenhart@ctkathens.org
for an appointment. We do provide in-service and help for all
in the catechetical program. SACRED HEART RETREAT
HOUSE EVENT
Do you want to do one last thing with family
before school starts? Have your family meet Paul, the great Apostle,
on Saturday, August 30, from 10:00 till 2:30 at Sacred
Heart Retreat House. Learn who some of his helpers were, how
he traveled, how he kept in touch with all the Christian communities
he started, how these communities made Jesus the center of their
lives. Then, ask yourself, How can I (we) imitate Paul
in todays world? Call 740-667-0100 to register by
Wednesday, August 27. WOMENS RETREAT:
HEALING FAITH
September 5-7 marks the date of the 2nd
Sisters on the River retreat. Registration begins Friday the
5th at 6:00 pm and the retreat ends Sunday at noon. It will be
held at the home of Pat Moore in Racine, Ohio. The cost is $25
and is due by August 15. Check out the bulletin boards in church
and the PC for registration forms and the flyer.
- LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Distribution of the Eucharist
The
text which is used in distributing Eucharist is The Body
of Christ, or The Blood of Christ. This is
deliberately ambiguous and refers both to the consecrated bread
being distributed and to the person receiving it.

RESPECT
LIFE
Scripture makes clear the challenge before
us in deciding our role in the right to life debate. Jesus says,
Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these
least ones, you did not do for me. (Matthew 25:46) If we
do nothing for the protection of the unborn, surely the least
among us, then we do nothing for Jesus. (Culture
of Life Family Services Newsletter, 11/07) AOH NEWS
