20TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
August 18/19, 2007

When does faith require divisions? When does it require unity?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 12:49 -53) Jesus wants his followers to know the truth. Jesus tells us that, if we are truly living as Christians, sometimes we will experience trouble and division. We cannot experience the peace of Christ until we turn away from sin and let God reign in our lives. Sometimes when people chose to do God’s will, those they love turn against them. This can happen when people do not fully understand or accept the message of Jesus. This conflict with loved ones is what Jesus speaks of today. Remember that Jesus himself suffered rejection.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Read the following situations. As a follower of Jesus, what do you think? Tell why the response is one that a follower of Christ would give, or not. Change the responses that are not Christian to truly Christian responses.
• lst football player: I have some pills that give you more strength and energy. Want some?
2nd football player: No, thanks. It’s against the rules. Besides, those pills can ruin your body.
• Laura: I invited the new girl in class to the movies with us on Saturday.
Lisa: Well, I’m not coming then. I thought you were MY friend!

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Why is the responsorial psalm supposed to be sung? The psalms in the Old Testament were written as songs. Some even have notes about instrumentation. They are poetic prayers which were used in worship by the community and by individuals. As poetry they express the whole gamut of human feeling, joy, sorrow, pain, gratitude, anger, praise. The psalms teach us that there is no feeling that we cannot bring to our God. We can stand honestly before God to express ourselves and know that God listens and understands. We have the examples of the Old Testament psalmist before us. The psalms have traditionally been attributed to David, but were actually written over a period of about 1000 years. David is considered to be the primary author and compiler.

RESPECT LIFE

The first right of the human person is his life. He has other goods and some are more precious, but this one is fundamental - the condition of all the others. Hence it must be protected above all others. It does not belong to society, nor does it belong to public authority in any form to recognize this right for some and not for others: all discrimination is evil, whether it be founded on race, sex, color or religion. It is not recognition by another that constitutes this right. This right is antecedent to its recognition; it demands recognition and it is strictly unjust to refuse it.
