"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

20TH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
August 19/20, 2006

How does your parish promote positive Jewish-Christian relations?
Gospel Reflection (John 6:51-58): Once again Jesus the Teacher is having a hard time getting through to his listeners. They resist his teaching that he is the living bread from heaven. When they continue to object, Jesus assures them that his flesh is real food and his blood is real drink. If they do not “feed on” him, they will have no life in them.
We are blessed because we can share the Living Bread at every Eucharist. As we satisfy our spiritual hunger, we remember those who hunger for food, shelter, friendship, or faith. We consider how we can respond to the hungers of the world.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What do you remember about your First Communion? Why was that day special to you and your family? How do you think receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus makes a difference in your life? What do you think are some of the spiritual hungers of people your age in the world today?
In what ways has your school or parish responded to the hungry? Name three ways you can help those who hunger for faith or friendship.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Book of Proverbs depicts wisdom through the image of a woman of great hospitality who prepares a feast and then sends out her maidens in search of guests to enjoy the meal. "[Wisdom calls,] 'You that are simple, turn in here!'/To those without sense she says,/'Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed./Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight'' (Proverbs 9:4-6).

Adults: What new understandings of my life in Christ have I gained from participating in the Eucharist this week?

Children: How does receiving Holy Communion help me tell others about Jesus?
FATHER MARTY'S VACATION

Father Marty is on vacation this week through Thursday, August 24th so there will be no daily Masses during that time.

WELCOME!

While Father Marty is on vacation our weekend Masses will be celebrated by Father Tom Nau from Ironton who is one of our diocesan priests. Let’s give Father Nau a warm welcome!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
"Who Do You Say I Am?" The 2006 Catechetical Sunday theme indicated that over 50 individuals offer thousands of hours to serve as teachers, aides, board members, tutors, teacher mentors, treasurer, Kroger Cards, set-up and clean-up, safety patrol, secretarial help and many other tasks in order to share their story with the children and households of our parishes. Join Us. Your life will be enriched by participating in the special ministry of passing on our faith. Jesus is our guide. We follow in His footsteps! We have many new and returning talented individuals to teach our young people, but we still need more to fill the 18 different classes offered on Tuesdays and Sundays. Teachers are needed for Sunday Fourth and Fifth grades and to lead the Junior High. We need a person to teach Tuesday for Third grade and to lead the Junior High. Classes begin Sunday, September 10, and Tuesday, September 12. Call Nancy Denhart for information, 594-8718 or 592-2711.

PARENTS of children in grades Pre-K through eighth, please note the change in the Religious Education starting date. We begin classes in the newly-painted-and-carpeted Christ the King Parish Center on September 10 and 12, NOT August 27 and 29 as previously published. Registration packets are being sent to your home. Please return forms via the collection basket or mail to the parish office.

RESPECT LIFE
In the minuscule body of an embryo in the first stages of life, we "may see and almost touch the hand of God. . .The love of God does not make distinctions between the newly conceived infant still in his or her mother's womb, the baby, the youth, the grown adult or the elderly, because in each of them He sees the sign of His own image and likeness. Pope Benedict XVI, speech on 2/27/06 to the international congress on "The Human Embryo Before Implantation," National Catholic Register, 3/12-3/18/06

The Great Warming has been endorsed by the National Council of Churches, Evangelical Environmental Network, and the Coalition on Environment and Jewish Life.
