21ST SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
August 25/26, 2007

What does the “narrow gate” to salvation mean to you?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 13:22-30) When someone asks Jesus how many will be saved, he answers by using the image of the narrow door. Those who do not remain faithful to him will be left outside. Jesus is warning people of faith not to take their salvation for granted. Just because we worship every weekend, we cannot assume that we can squeeze through the narrow door. We may be surprised to discover that some who seem less worthy will enter the kingdom before us.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus reminds us that we are not to judge others as “worthy” of the kingdom or not. Our human judgment is faulty. We only see so much. God sees the entire person, heart and soul, past, present, and future. Some who seem to be “last” (“losers” in our current slang) may well be “first” with God. And some we look up to as “first” (the winners in our world) may turn out to be “last” in the kingdom. We just don’t know. And where others are with God is really not our concern. The question is: where do YOU want to be with God? How can YOU stay close to Jesus? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we prepare to share in the feast of the heavenly banquet, we must prepare our hearts. There is no room at God’s table for prejudice or narrow-minded thinking.

Adults: What personal prejudices or preconceptions cause me to judge others, and what can I do to release them?

Children: What can I do to reach out to someone who is different than I am this week?

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Why is the psalm called “responsorial?” In a certain sense, the psalm is a response to the first reading. The name, however, derives from the fact that it is in an antiphonal “call and response” format. It is representative of the dialogical nature of the liturgy itself, sort of a “conversational” form of prayer. This is why it is important to use musical settings which honor that format, rather than hymns which are based on psalms, but which have no repeated antiphon.
What is the importance of the responsorial psalm text? The psalm, taken from the Sacred Scripture, is the Word on God. In the psalm, we are responding to the Word of God with the Word of God. The psalms have been chosen because of their relevance to the readings of the day and help us interpret them. One description I have heard is that the responsorial psalm is the aura within which we understand the rest of the readings.

Slow me down, Lord

Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind.
Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time.
Give me, amid the confusion of the day, the calmness of the everlasting hills.
Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magical, restoring power of sleep.
Teach me the art of taking minute vacations -- of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines from a good book.
Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life’s enduring values that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny.
