TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
August 29/30, 2009

How does your parish help you to keep your heart close to God?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23): The word “hypocrite” comes from an ancient Greek term meaning “actor.” In today’s gospel story, Jesus accuses the religious leaders of being hypocrites. They act as though they are speaking for God but they are really speaking about what matters to them. Jesus points out that they are more concerned about pious practices than they are about God’s commandments. They criticized Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands before eating. But they showed no interest in the goodness of the disciples’ hearts.
Jesus teaches that religious rules and regulations should never become more important than God’s people. He wants us to understand that our outward behavior should reflect what is in our hearts. A good heart will not produce evil actions. Nor will washing our hands make us clean inside where it really counts.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What character in a comic strip, a TV show, or a movie can you think of who acted like a hypocrite in some way? Tell how he or she acted. Why does Jesus call the religious leaders in today’s story hypocrites? Find one statement that summarizes his complaint against them.
How would you explain why having a good heart is more important than giving God “lip service”? What are some of the things Jesus says comes from within people? What sacrament can help us to know the difference between just following the rules and following Jesus?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Media coverage of the Church almost exclusively deals with the externals of religious practice and rarely gives a glimpse of the inner realities of faith. In this environment, believers need a clear understanding of faith and its practice.
Adults: Can I name a time when the deep convictions of faith led me to make a decision or take action in a way that may have surprised or puzzled others?

Children: Because I believe in Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, what good things does God want me to do for others?

RCIA “Come and See” meetings

There are two opportunities to learn how adults are initiated in the Catholic faith - Thursday, September 10th at 7 PM at St. Paul or Sunday, September 13th at 7:30 PM at Christ the King. Please pray for those who might be considering it, share this info with them and offer to accompany them to “come and see”.
SPECIAL MASS FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS
To bless and recognize the ministry of health care providers (professional, personal and volunteer), Bishop R. Daniel Conlon will celebrate a White Mass symbolic of the white coat/uniform on Tuesday, September 1, at 7:00 PM at CTK. Light refreshment will follow and all are welcome.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Are you a faith-filled person who loves children? Perhaps you are being called to be a person who “echoes God’s Word” as a catechist. The Religious Education Program has openings for catechists. We meet Sundays at 12:15 or Tuesdays at 6:30 during the school year. We provide in-service and help for all in the catechetical program. Contact Nancy for more info.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES

Ambry
On Holy Thursday the holy oils are presented to the community and enthroned in their place of honor. The place where they stay during the year, usually near the baptismal font, is called the ambry. The oils remind us that in our sacramental life of faith, simple and ordinary elements are used to celebrate profound realities. The oil of the sick is used in the sacrament of the sick. Sacred chrism is used at baptism, confirmation and holy orders. The oil of catechumens is used at baptism. These oils are blessed by the bishop at the cathedral during the Chrism Mass shortly before the Triduum. In many dioceses, representatives from the parishes present the oils to the bishop for blessing. The oils are then brought back to the parishes for use throughout the year.
