22ND SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
September 1/2, 2007

Jesus tells his host that he should invite people who can’t repay him.
What can I do for someone in need who can’t do anything for me?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 14:1, 7-14) Have you noticed how often Jesus talks about parties and dinners? He wants us to be prepared for that great feast that is the fullness of God’s reign. In today’s gospel, Jesus prepares us with some good advice about ways to be a guest and ways to be a host. As God’s guests in this world, we should act humbly and remember that we are always in the presence of Someone greater than we are. As hosts of God’s people, we should offer hospitality to those who cannot reward us.
In the custom of his time and place, Jesus exaggerates to make a point. We do not have to leave out our friends and families. But neither should we leave out the poor and disabled.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Because God created each one of us and loves each one of us, each one of us is important. We start out as babies who are supposed to be “selfish,” who need to have others pay attention to us and take care of our needs because we can’t do anything for ourselves! Gradually we grow up and are able to do more things by ourselves. Gradually, we can help take care of others. We can be happy “behind the scenes” and we can be happy “at the head table.” Life usually has a little bit of both in store for us.
What can you do by and for yourself that you couldn’t do last year or a few years ago? How can you take care of others now, perhaps a pet who needs food or water, or a little brother or sister who needs your attention and help? How can you do what Jesus says in the gospel and help the ones among us who need our help the most?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

While all human beings want honor and prestige, Jesus shifts the focus to God. It is God’s honor and respect that really counts. Kingdom behavior seeks God first as a path toward greatness.

Adults: What can I do this week to act with more humility and more reliance on God?

Children: How can I keep God first in my life this week?

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Types of Psalms—Most of the psalms fit into three basic types with some subdivisions. The first type is Psalms of Lament, an expression of grief or sorrow moving to hope and finally to praise. These are usually divided into two groups, Penitential Psalms and Imprecatory (or Cursing) Psalms.
Thanksgiving Psalms recall a previous call for help, acknowledge God’s deliverance and end in praise. Two subdivisions of the Thanksgiving Psalm are Salvation History Psalms, which in some way refer to the exodus story, and Songs of Trust, which reflect on God’s actions resulting in trust.
The final type is Hymnic Psalms or Psalms of Praise. These begin and end with praise of God, describing in the body of the psalm the basis for the praise.
At liturgy we rarely hear an entire psalm, making it sometimes difficult to know the type. See if you can tell, or go home and read the entire psalm to clarify the context.
