"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

22ND SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
September 2/3, 2006

What does it mean to you to be clean “inside”?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23): The word “hypocrite” comes from an ancient Greek term meaning “actor.” In today’s gospel story, Jesus accuses the religious leaders of being hypocrites. They act as though they are speaking for God but they are really speaking about what matters to them. Jesus points out that they are more concerned about pious practices than they are about God’s commandments. They criticized Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands before eating. But they showed no interest in the goodness of the disciples’ hearts.
Jesus teaches that religious rules and regulations should never become more important than God’s people. He wants us to understand that our outward behavior should reflect what is in our hearts. A good heart will not produce evil actions. Nor will washing our hands make us clean inside where it really counts.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What character in a comic strip, a TV show, or a movie can you think of who acted like a hypocrite in some way? Tell how he or she acted. Why does Jesus call the religious leaders in today’s story hypocrites? Find one statement that summarizes his complaint against them.
How would you explain why having a good heart is more important than giving God “lip service”? What are some of the things Jesus says comes from within people? What sacrament can help us to know the difference between just following the rules and following Jesus?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS FOR THE RIDE HOME
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel Jesus does not reject the law of God. He invites us to look into our heart and discover our motivation for the actions we take and the decisions we make. Holiness flows out of our relationship with our loving God through the action of the Holy Spirit.

Adults: How can I develop a grateful heart in order that God's law might become an expression of freedom and that my actions authentically reflect my desire to follow the path of Jesus?

Children: What can I change in my life to honor
God's law more genuinely?
CONGRATULATIONS!

SPECIAL COLLECTION
In June, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) created the special collection “Rebuild Church, Rebuild Hope” in response to the immense need for additional financial resources to aid the continuing recovery efforts in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Biloxi. These two dioceses, so devastated by the ravages of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, are still in a state of unimaginable need.
Envelopes are available at the bulletin boards for the collection weekend. Please give generously.
LITURGICAL MINISTERS
Please let Nancy Sand know any dates you CANNOT minister September through December via email: nsand@ctkathens.org or by phone, 592-2711.
The September issue of Living with Christ is now available at the bulletin board in the Gathering space. These booklets are very well done. Each issue is $2.00, or you can purchase a yearly subscription for $15.00. Contact the office for more information.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Classes begin next Sunday, September 10, and Tuesday, September 12. Registration forms have been mailed out to parish families with children; please fill them out and return the forms promptly. If you haven't received a form, you may call the parish office for help.
Teachers are needed for grades 4th, 5th and 6th on Sundays and for 3rd grade on Tuesdays. If you are interested, please call Nancy Denhart, 594-8718 or 592-2711. Join Us. Your life will be enriched by participating in the special ministry of passing on our faith. Jesus is our guide. We follow in His footsteps!
YOUTH GROUP NEWS
Jr. and Sr. High students are invited to the first youth group meeting of the year - Swapping Stories and prepping for Cardboard City. We’ll be meeting from 6:30 - 7:45PM on Tuesday night September 12 in the St. Paul Hall. Also, please plan to join us and some college students in the Newman group for a picnic at noon on Sunday, September 17th at the Dairy Lane Park to kickoff our new “Friends in God” program.
R.C.I.A.
RCIA will begin on Thursday, September 21. We invite those who are:
• interested in becoming Catholic
• those who are already baptized and who wish to become part of the Catholic Church
• those college age and above who have not been confirmed to be part of this process.
We are also looking for sponsors and team members. There may be a member of your family or a close friend who you think might be interested in RCIA. All that is lacking is an invitation. Please contact the parish office or use one of the sign-up cards.
PASTORAL COUNCIL
We are beginning the process of selecting a new Pastoral Council. The members of the current Council have served faithfully for the past three years and have been a tremendous help to the parish. We owe each a debt of gratitude.
The Pastoral Council is the chief advisory body of the parish. It serves in a planning and envisioning capacity. Through prayer and study and listening it looks to these major areas of parish life: community, liturgical formation, spiritual formation, service to the poor and evangelization and stewardship.
Nomination Process Will Begin Next Weekend!
Please nominate any parishioner you think would be a good member of our Pastoral Council. You may nominate as many people as you wish, and you may also nominate yourself. Nomination forms will be found at the church entrance beginning next weekend. Watch the bulletin for further information.
Be doers of the word and not hearers only. . .
