23RD SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
September 8/9, 2007

Jesus challenges his followers to leave their possessions behind.
What could you let go of to follow Jesus more closely?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 14:25-33) Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem when he stops to give this no-nonsense talk to a great crowd of people who want to follow him. Like any rabbi of his time, Jesus uses exaggeration to command attention. He wants to get the point across that he must be at the center of his followers’ lives. Jesus insists that no one can be his disciple who does not consider him before family or self. The disciple who thinks he or she can serve Jesus part-time is foolish. She is like a builder who has no idea how much it will cost to complete a tower. He like a king who goes to battle with no idea how many troops his enemy has. The disciple must be willing to renounce or give up everything out of love for Christ.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
No one loves us more than Jesus does. No one loves our family members -- mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers -- more than Jesus does. And he wants us to love one another.
But Jesus knows that sometimes what we think of as “love” may not be. Sometimes misguided “love” can prevent us from growing up and taking responsibility. True love frees us to be our true selves. Jesus is reminding us that we must take responsibility for our choices. We are free to choose to follow him. When we are little, we learn about Jesus from our parents and teachers and we follow their example. When we are older, we must begin to learn what Jesus means in our lives and to follow him because we choose him all the way!

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Gospel surely is a wake-up call for us today. Of all the things and people we hold dear, Jesus is to be first and foremost. Our willingness to carry the crosses that come our way is a lifetime effort. While these are challenging demands, it is helpful to remember that we are in good company on this journey.

Adults: What things distract me from keeping Jesus first in my life?

Children: How can I put Jesus first in my mind and heart this week?

WHY CATHOLIC? JOURNEY THROUGH THE CATECHISM
Christ the King and St. Paul’s parishes are continuing Book III - “LIFE IN CHRIST - Walking with God”, this fall. Come, Taste and See! Join a small group, and reflect on the Sacraments. The focus area for the six week sessions concentrates on the implications of the Ten Commandments. Sign up September 8 - September 15 or call Mary and Pat Reddan at 740-594-8591. If you are already a part of a small group, please contact your small group leader. If you have been a part of a Why Catholic? group, why not make a personal invitation to a friend or a neighbor, there is no requirement, all you have to do is to join in. The six-week sessions will begin the week of October 7 and continue through the week of November 11.
PEACE AND JUSTICE NOTES
Join efforts to end poverty world wide! Information and actions we can take to correct problems with previous third world debt relief attempts will be provided Sept. 29 - 30. Congress needs to know that too many plates are empty.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
The second reading, which follows the psalm (frequently omitted in children’s liturgies), is taken from the letters of St. Paul and others. Hence, they used to be called “epistles.” Sometimes this reading is taken from the Book of Revelation. Most often they are exhortations or explanations given by St. Paul to the various communities at which he had ministered. Again, they are a faith witness from those who have gone before. They speak to us the same messages that were deemed necessary in the early Church.
