EXALTATION OF THE
HOLY CROSS
September 13/14, 2008

Who carries a cross today?

Gospel Reflection (John 3:13-17): Today’s gospel offers us a great insight into Jesus’ teaching. In response to the searching questions of the Pharisee Nicodemus, who came to see him under cover of night, Jesus leads him gradually into the deeper truths about God’s love for us. We hear Jesus explain so beautifully that “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,” but to save the world. And why? Because “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son...” (John 3:16). In other words, God would do anything for us!

Discussion Points for Gospel: What ought to be our gratitude for God’s great love? What part does the cross play in your personal life? Do you wear a cross as a reminder of God’s unlimited love and Jesus’ willingness to give his life for us? Or is it merely a piece of jewelry? How can we imitate the model of Jesus’ unselfish love, in our families and in our relationships with friends?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Jesus told Nicodemus that his death would bring saving love to the world and an offer of eternal life to those who believe in him.

Adults: To what extent do I try to join the trials and sufferings of my life to those of Jesus?

Children: When I see a crucifix or picture of Jesus on the cross, do I say a prayer of thanks to him for loving me that much?

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENTS

Fall is a time of change here in Athens: school begins, new parishioners (university students as well as families) are welcomed into our community, a new year of religious education begins. We change our Mass schedule to reflect the addition of students to our community. And we sign-up to participate in various ministries — the sharing of our time and talents — for the coming year.
This weekend, September 13/14, is our annual Sign-up Weekend. Please take some time to pray about how you want to become involved in parish life -- and then sign up!!! We’ll have another opportunity to sign-up next weekend, September 20/2.

EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
This weekend we honor the Holy Cross by which Christ redeemed the world. The public veneration of the Cross originated in the fourth century with observance of the feast being celebrated by Christians on September 14 ever sinc   Christians “exalt” the Cross of Christ as the instrument of our salvation. Adoration of the Cross is adoration of Jesus Christ who suffered and died on this Roman instrument of torture for our redemption from sin and death. The cross represents the One Sacrifice by which Jesus, obedient even unto death, accomplished our salvation. The cross is a symbolic summary of the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ — all in one image; it is the most potent and universal symbol of the Christian faith.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Receiving in the hand
One of the values of receiving in the hand is that it is a more active participation. It returns to the practice of the early Church, when the celebration of Eucharist held more emphasis as a meal. It is more in keeping with the adult practice of feeding oneself, rather than being fed as children.

KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY
Prison ministry is a very important aspect of Christian life. It is one of the corporal works of mercy. Five of our area priests have been taking turns saying mass each week at the Hocking Correctional Facility for the past fifteen years. In Matthew’s gospel Jesus says, “I was in prison and you visited me.”
The Kairos Prison Ministry, an interdenominational program, is an effective way of bringing the love of Christ to those in prison and it follows a retreat format that many of us are familiar with. It will be held at the Hocking Correctional Facility October 2-5. Christ the King will be joining other churches in the area to support this worthwhile effort. There are two ways that we can do this.
The first way is through prayer. The program relies on praying for the success of the retreat throughout its entirety from 3:00 pm October 2 to 9:00 pm October 5. There will be a sign up sheet in the Gathering Space. Please choose a time when you’re able to commit yourself to pray, wherever you may be.
The second way is to bake cookies that will be used as refreshments and that participants in the retreat can share with other inmates. Bake at least two dozen cookies (nothing fancy) that are to be packed in one gallon clear plastic bags and delivered to the Parish Center on Saturday, September 27 before noon. Each two dozen cookies must be packed in a separate bag.
Jesus calls us to “Love one another as I have loved you.” Thank you for helping.
