24TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
September 15/16, 2007

God rejoices when people turn back to him.
Where in your life do you need forgiveness?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 15:1-32) It’s celebration time! The lost sheep has been found. The lost coin has been located. Jesus tells these two “lost and found” parables to show us how delighted God is when a sinner is welcomed home. Notice that God does not just “sit around” waiting and hoping that the sinner will show up. God goes out like a shepherd seeking that one lost lamb, like a woman seeking that one special coin. Then God says, “Rejoice with me! A sinner has repented.”

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Did you ever lose something and not bother to look for it? What does that say about the value you place on that object? From the teaching of Jesus, we know we are valuable to God. We do get lost at times, but God would never “lose” us. He never forgets about us.
He always knows where we are! But sometimes it seems we “lose” God. We forget about him. We forget that we are valuable to him. What happens to us and to our lives when we forget our value as children of God? What happens when we forget that all other people are valuable to God, too?
(from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

While we might be tempted to say, “They are a lost cause, “ Jesus reveals that there is no such thing in God’s eyes. The Gospel further challenges us to stop any righteous comparing and judging of others.

Adults: What can I do to reach out to people I may have formerly judged?

Children: How can I show God’s forgiveness in my actions with others?

PEACE AND JUSTICE NOTES
Remember the Jubilee Year and efforts to cut poverty in half by 2015 through canceling third world debt? We’re half way to 2015 but far from that goal. Please join us the weekend of Sept. 29-30 and find out about the new Jubilee Act.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
After the second reading and a brief period of silence, the cantor begins the Gospel Acclamation. During most of the year this is an “Alleluia,” a song of praise to greet the Lord present in the Good News. Alleluia is a joyful word of praise and is used throughout the year, except during Lent. During Lent the alleluia is suppressed. In a sense we fast from it throughout this season of preparation for Easter so that it may sound forth with renewed energy at Easter. Instead we sing, “Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory” or a similar acclamation of praise. The Gospel Acclamation is supposed to be sung. If it is not sung, it is to be omitted.
