"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

Vacation Bible School

24TH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
September 16/17, 2006

What message does faith give you to address suffering?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 8:27-35): In this reading, Jesus teaches his disciples what they have gradually come to discover: He is indeed the Messiah. But he is a Messiah who must suffer and die.
Peter found this hard to accept. For Peter, the Messiah would not, could not, suffer. Judging by human standards, not God’s, Peter failed to accept God’s will for the Messiah. Jesus assured all his disciples that they, too, must suffer: deny themselves, take up the cross, and follow him.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Why do people reject other people? Have you ever been rejected for doing what was right or for “not going along with the crowd”? (Remember: God created each of us as unique persons. The person who rejects knowing you is the real loser! He or she is missing a unique creation of God!)
What “crosses” do you have to “take up” in your life right now? Will you ask Jesus to help you?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
24th Sunday of Ordinary Time

How someone answers Jesus' question from today's Gospel, "Who do you say that I am?" makes a difference how they live their daily life. As you go about your routine this week, consider the following:

Adults: What choices must I make this week i order to follow in the footsteps of Jesus who, out of pure love, freely embraced suffering for others?

Children: What might Jesus be asking of me this week?
STEWARDSHIP
The response for the collection to help the Diocese of Biloxi and the Archdiocese of New Orleans was very generous. The parish sent to the diocese $1441 to be forwarded. Thanks to all those who so generously contributed to this effort!
PASTORAL COUNCIL
The nomination process for our new Pastoral Council wraps up this weekend. Council members will serve for a three-year term. Please nominate anyone you feel would be a good member of our Council. You may nominate as many people as you wish, and you may also nominate yourself. Nomination ballots are located at the two bulletin boards in church and also at the front desk in the Parish Center. Please place your ballot in the marked box in the Gathering Space.
The following two weekends, September 23/24 and September 30/October 1, we will be affirming our new Council members. Watch for details!
BISHOP CONLON'S PASTORAL VISIT
During the week of September 23 - the 28th, Bishop Conlon will be visiting our area. Please take a flyer from the Gathering Space for details of his visit.
On Sunday, September 24, the Bishop will be speaking at St. Mary of the Hills church hall from 12:30 to 5:30. A light luncheon will be served. If you plan to attend, please sign up on the sheet posted on the bulletin board. This will help the hosts know how many meals to provide.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
Classes have begun and we still need some teachers for the third and six grade classes. If anyone is interested in teaching, please contact Nancy Denhart, 592-2711 or 594-8718.
You may contact Nancy about registering your child for class, too, or just come to the Parish Center either Sunday or Tuesday to register.
YOUTH GROUP NEWS
Please plan to join us and some college students in the Newman group for a picnic at noon on Sunday, September 17th at the Dairy Lane Park to kickoff our new “Friends in God” program.
NEWMAN COMMUNITY NEWS
The Newman Community has spent the last couple of meetings welcoming new members and warming up for a great year! This week will be a Service meeting, and all are welcome to come and see what it means to follow Christ’s example of leading by service. The meeting is Wednesday, 7pm, at the Christ the King Parish Center. See you there!

R.C.I.A.
RCIA begins this Thursday, September 21. We invite those who are:
• interested in becoming Catholic

We are also looking for sponsors and team members. There may be a member of your family or a close friend who you think might be interested in RCIA. All that is lacking is an invitation. Please contact the parish office or use one of the sign-up cards.
