TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
September 19/20, 2009

How does your parish foster children’s coming to Jesus?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 9:30-37): When people suspect that something bad is about to happen, fear sometimes causes them to stick their heads in the sand and pretend that everything will remain the same. When Jesus tried to tell his disciples about how he would soon suffer and die, they were afraid to ask him any questions. They acted as though everything would stay the same. They even argued about who was the greatest among them. So Jesus corrected them by saying that whoever wanted to be the greatest would have to be the servant of all.
Embracing a small child, Jesus told the disciples, “Whoever welcomes a child such as this welcomes me.” He wanted them to understand that they were to be willing servants with the childlike qualities of innocence, honesty, and lack of pretension. Jesus identified himself with the innocent child who is completely dependent on God.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What qualities of small children do you admire? How do you know how Jesus felt about children? Why is it important for all of us to protect and care for children? Name one way you will practice a childlike trust in God.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The child whom Jesus embraces in today’s Gospel was a marginalized person in the ancient world. By asking his disciples to welcome a child, Jesus directs all of us to care for the least among us.
Adults: Do I know people who are struggling because of loss, sickness, or economic hardship? How can I serve them?

Children: Do I realize that those who I do not like are still loved by God?

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENTS
Last weekend we celebrated our annual Sign-up -- Sign-up to get involved, to meet new people, to participate in new activities, to become active members of the body of Christ here at Christ the King.
This weekend we’re offering another opportunity to sign-up. If you haven’t returned the cards you’ve received in the mail, please do so this week. If you haven’t received a card, take one from the table in the Gathering Space and check out the ministries and activities CTK offers -- and get involved! You’ll be glad you did!
CATECHETICAL SUNDAY -- Today!
This year’s theme is “Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word.” Those who have been designated by the community to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

The Religious Education Program has openings for catechists. We provide in-service and help for all in the catechetical program. Contact Nancy for more info.
Religious Ed. Teachers/Aides Needed for Pre-K and Kindergarten @ 10:30 Mass
If the desire of your heart is to teach young children about God’s love for them and to help develop their God-given talents and gifts, we need you. The lessons are age-appropriate and easy to use. Children are dismissed from Mass at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Word and are escorted to their classrooms. Parents pick up their children from the classroom at the end of Mass. Teachers can work on a four-week rotation or full-time. Please see Suzanne Vazzano after Mass today for more information about the program.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES

Altar Servers
Ministers of the altar, altar servers, serve the community’s prayer by helping to make the ritual of the Mass proceed with style and grace. Servers are boys and girls who have already made their First Holy Communion. They remind us at every weekend Mass that in the task of worship there is a place for everyone. Their ministry includes being an example to the rest of the community through their faithful attention and participation during the liturgy.
