25TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
September 22/23, 2007

What “riches” do you have and how do you use them?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 16:1-13) Jesus warns his followers today against allowing money to become their master. They must use money in an intelligent and responsible way. But they must be ever alert to the ways in which concerns about money can take over their lives. Jesus advises them to prove themselves trustworthy in dealing with material wealth. Then they will be more trustworthy in spiritual matters as well.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus has respect for money. He knows it represents the work and the livelihood of people. In our society, we need money to care for ourselves and for one another. Even though life is more important than money, robbing people is a crime. Sometimes people take money under false pretenses. They promise to invest someone’s money and instead they use it for themselves. We call this and other ways of defrauding people “white collar crime.” The people who do this wear shirts and ties (“white collars”), but it is still a terrible crime, especially when the poor and the elderly are defrauded of their life’s savings. What do you think the prophet Amos and Jesus would say about this today? (from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

All that we have comes from God who has entrusted the earth’s resources into our care. When we make idols of money and possessions, we stand in the face of God’s plan for the kingdom. When we share our wealth in wise and responsible stewardship we stand in solidarity with the whole human community.

Adults: When I look at poverty in my city, what decisive action can I take to share the gifts I have?

Children: What do I have that can be shared with those who are less fortunate?

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
When the Gospel Acclamation is begun, we all stand. We stand to honor Christ, whose Word is being proclaimed. We stand because that is the stance of being at attention and ready to respond to God’s Word. We stand in reverence and in praise and gratitude.
The Gospel reading is the highpoint of the Liturgy of the Word. It is one of the ways in which Christ is present to us during the liturgy. We stand to hear stories of Christ’s life on earth. This is not a biography, but a faith witness by those who wished to share with others their own experience of Christ. The Gospel reading is taken from one of the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.
