TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY
October 4/5 , 2008

Pray for married couples. How does your parish support them?
How do you?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 21:33- 43): Jesus compares God to a vineyard owner whose messengers go to the tenants of the vineyard to collect his share of the grapes at harvest time. But the tenants beat, stone, or murder the owner’s messengers. When the owner sends his son, the tenants treat him as they did the messenger. They kill the son, hoping to keep the vineyard, his inheritance, for themselves.
The son in the parable is Jesus, of course, and the messengers are God’s prophets, who speak in God’s name. Jesus is reminding us that the kingdom will be taken away from those who do not give God a harvest of good works.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Can you find the scriptures that Jesus quotes while telling this parable? Name the people and things that were rejected in this parable.
When Jesus was telling the story of what happened to the prophets and to the son, how do you think he must have felt? Are we rejecting any of God’s messengers, or in any way rejecting Jesus? How can we accept Jesus and his messengers in our lives? What prayers can help us offer the harvest of our lives and work to God

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

It is the underlying greed of the tenants in the Gospel which moves them to murder: “...let us kill him and get his inheritance” (Matthew 21:38). Unless we restrain our desires for wealth and power, we may find ourselves contributing to the culture of violence.

Adults: How might I have violated another person’s freedom or dignity by the use of my authority or position?

Children: How is it that those who talk to solve problems can be stronger than those who fight to get their way?

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY
Life and Dignity of the Human Person

In a world warped by materialism and declining respect for human life, the Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society.
Our belief in the sanctity of human life and the inherent dignity of the human person is the foundation of all principles of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and assisted suicide. The value of human life is being threatened by increasing use of the death penalty. The dignity of life is undermined when the creation of human life is reduced to the manufacture of a product, as in human cloning or proposals for genetic engineering to create “perfect” human beings.
We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.

Communion Song

HOPE AND TRUST IN LIFE!
The Church … is called to proclaim the gift of life, to serve life, and to promote a culture of life. … This is the message of hope we are called to proclaim and embody in a world where self-centeredness, greed, violence, and cynicism so often seem to choke the fragile growth of grace in people’s hearts.
