27TH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
October 7/8, 2006
Vocation Awareness
Sunday
How does your parish support married couples? How do you?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 10:2-16): Some people are more interested in the letter of the law than the spirit of the law. The Pharisees tried to test Jesus by asking him if he agreed with the law of Moses regarding divorce. Jesus draws their attention to the true meaning of marriage. He reminds the Pharisees of the teaching from Genesis about the man and the woman becoming one flesh. Jesus is focusing on God’s loving plan for marriage partners.
In the second story, Jesus scolds his disciples for trying to keep the little children away from him. He hugs, holds, and blesses the children. Once again he teaches that all who follow him must trust in God and openly accept the Good News.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Imagine that you are responding to a parish survey of young people. The topic of the survey is “The Good Marriage.” How would you respond to these survey questions: What are the most important qualities needed by both husband and wife? What are some of the obstacles to a good and lasting marriage? Why is it important for partners to share their faith?
The final question on the survey is: Name three ways you can prepare now to be the kind of person who has the most important qualities needed by both husbands and wives. How will you respond?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
27th Sunday of Ordinary Time

By instructing the disciples not to hinder the children coming to him, Jesus lifted up the children's innocence and receptivity as virtues all people must have to enter into the kingdom of God.

Adults: How do my children or the children of my friends and neighbors restore my compassion and humanity?

Children: What would I do if I had a chance to sit with Jesus?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IDEAS
Four Pillars
-- The answers to any questions you may have about what we as Catholics believe, the faith we are asked to live, the Sacraments we celebrate, or the way we pray are as close as your copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Faith, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer are referred to as the “four pillars” of the Catechism. You can purchase a copy of the Catechism at the office.

Why Do Catholics Do That? -- Why did some saints disappear from the liturgical calendar?
Once a saint always a saint. After Vatican II, the calendar of feast days was altered to represent a greater variety of saints. The old calendar featured mostly Europeans, especially French and Italian Saints. To introduce saints from Asia, Africa and the Americas, the Church “traded” feasts for some saints. But those holy men and women from the old calendar are still saints -- they just don’t all have a world-wide commemoration on the current calendar.

RESPECT LIFE
Advocates of embryonic stem cell research often use diabetes as an example of a disease that their unethical research will cure some day. California has even set aside taxpayer money to fund this immoral medical approach. How ironic, then, that in California, the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology is set to begin a vaccine-based treatment of Type 1 diabetes in humans before the en of this year. This is yet another example of how medical research is coming up with ethical treatments of devastating diseases at a time when embryonic stem cell research has yet to produce any usable results.
