TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
October 11/12, 2008

Pray for married couples. How does your parish support them?
How do you?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 21:1-14): This is a story that actually happened: When a groom-to-be called off the wedding, the bride decided to go ahead with the wedding banquet. Instead of inviting friends and relatives, she invited some homeless people. These unlikely guests in their thrift-shop clothes had a wonderful time. And the bride who didn’t become a bride had the joy of sharing her banquet with them. This story is very similar to today’s gospel and the parable Jesus tells about the feast hosted by God. The invited guests do not show up, so other guests are gathered from the streets and invited to share the table and the joy. Sometimes we might ignore God’s invitation.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Do we recognize that God has an invitation for us every day? How can we receive and accept it? Have you ever thought that other things were more important, or that you were too busy to accept God’s invitation to Eucharist, sacraments, prayer, or doing something pleasing to God and helpful to others?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time

We can identify with the second group of guests gathered from the highways and the byways. We, with all of our successes and failures, have received an invitation to come to God’s banquet.

Adults: What “garment” do I need to clean or iron this week to better prepare to participate in the banquet of God, the Eucharist?

Children: How do I prepare myself for the Sunday Mass?

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
October 18/19, 2008

Next weekend, Pope Benedict XVI calls every Catholic in the world to celebrate our vocation to be missionary. It’s World Mission Sunday!
As Catholics around the world -- here at home and in the Missions -- gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, we are to pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work. We pray for those awaiting the “Good News” of our Lord’s great love for us and for the missionaries who offer the poor and suffering the light of Christ. And we are to offer financial help through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.
RESPECT LIFE
A society unable to accept its suffering members and incapable of helping to share their suffering and to bear it inwardly through “compassion” is a cruel and inhuman society. … To suffer with the other and for others; to suffer for the sake of truth and justice; to suffer out of love and in order to become a person who truly loves—these are fundamental elements of humanity, and to abandon them would destroy man himself.
--Pope Benedict XVI, Spe Salvi (Nov. 30, 2007)

PARISH FAITH FORMATION (PFF) UPDATE
Progress continues on implementing the vision for catechesis put forth by the PFF committee, a diverse 20-member group that worked together over the past few years to discern how to apply the National Directory for Catechesis in our parishes.
To support the part of that vision that calls for a stronger emphasis on adult faith formation (AFF) and to help connect or integrate all parish activities that contribute to our ongoing formation, Greg Kremer has been appointed the AFF leader and the PFF Committee coordinator. Plans are underway for AFF activities related to the Year of St. Paul.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Communion Song II
This song begins when the priest receives the Body and Blood of Christ and continues until all have received. This is to unify the action of communion. It is not supposed to be the priest’s communion and then the people’s communion, but the communion of all the Body of Christ together.

DIFFICULT DIALOGUES
This grant-funded initiative seeks to foster growth and community between students, faculty, and local Athenians by engaging in discussion about topics that plague our world. The current theme involves looking at these issues from the eyes of the world’s many religions. We plan two panel-led forum discussions each quarter. The first forum is Tuesday, October 14, from 7-9 PM in OU’s Walter Hall, room 235, and the theme will be politics and religion. All are welcome to attend, and anyone who wishes to be on the panel can contact Kelli Lupas, Community Outreach Coordinator, 1-440-251-6826.
