28TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
October 14/15, 2006

When have you shown your trust in God's power?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 10:17-27): The rich young man in this story is like a mountain climber who has almost reached the summit. But the final stretch will be more difficult than the distance he has already come. He comes to seek wisdom from Jesus about how to achieve everlasting life. He assures the Good Teacher that he has kept the commandments since he was a child. Jesus looks at him with love and challenges him to do one thing more. If he wants to reach the summit of treasure in heaven, the young man must sell his possessions and follow Jesus. This he cannot do. So he goes away sad.
Jesus assures his disciples that entering the kingdom of God is no easy matter. Those who are attached to their possessions will have a more difficult time. However, those who rely on God to achieve the impossible can do all good things.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Look back at this gospel story. Place yourself in the sandals of the rich young man. When you approach Jesus, what are you expecting? When you tell him about how you have kept the commandments, what are you hoping he will say? Why do you think Jesus looks at you with love? What is your reaction to the one thing more Jesus says you must do? What are you telling yourself as you go away sad? Might you feel differently later on? Why?
In what ways do you already share or give away some of your possessions? What message is Jesus giving us about our attitudes towards riches? Do you think this gospel story has a happy ending? Why? (from Sadlier "We Believe" web site)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
28th Sunday of Ordinary Time

The tragedy of the man who comes to Jesus in today's Gospel motivates us to make our choices wisely. In each moment of our lives the way we use our freedom affects our future and the future of other people. What we decide today will impact eternal life.

Adults: In what areas of my life am I called to choose the good this week?

Children: What good things would Jesus want me to do for others?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IDEAS
Parent Talk: Sunday Mass is not negotiable

After Theresa turned ten years old, I had to drag her to Mass on Sundays. She said it was boring and didn’t want to go. For lots of reasons, attending Mass is not negotiable in our house. So how can I help her to love it as I do?
Our pastor suggested we try different Masses. We usually go to the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass because the priest is very learned and gives inspiring homilies. But at the 5:30 p.m. Saturday vigil Mass the children get to do the readings and act as ushers. Theresa thought that looked cool.
Now we take turns choosing the Mass we attend. When it’s Theresa’s turn, she chooses the children’s Mass because she loves ushering and handing out bulletins afterwards. And the grace she gets from participating in Mass instead of fighting it can’t be beat.

RESPECT LIFE

California legislators’ attempt to make the state the second in the nation to allow physician-assisted suicide has been unexpectedly halted by a state Senate committee. The deciding vote was cast by a previously undecided senator who stated he could not trust future legislatures to resist the power of money interest to expand the option of assisted suicide beyond patients facing a terminal illness.
