28TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
Vocation Awareness Sunday
October 13/14, 2007

For which of God’s gifts are you especially grateful today?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 17:11-19) In this story of a miraculous healing, ten lepers cry out to Jesus for help. In Jesus’ time, lepers were outcasts of society. Jesus tells them to go show themselves to the priests, who will witness their healed condition and allow them back into society. Only one leper, a Samaritan, returns to Jesus to praise and thank God. This man is not a Jew but a foreigner. Jesus points out that the Samaritan leper has gained something far more important than a physical cure; he has gained his eternal salvation.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Did you ever wonder why the other nine lepers did not return to thank Jesus? Try to think of some reasons: one may have hurried back to his family; another may have meant to thank Jesus, but got busy with other things and forgot. Can you think of some other reasons? Do you always thank someone for a gift? Why or why not? How do you do it?
When and how do you give thanks to God for his gifts to you? (Hint: What does the word Eucharist mean?)
(from Sadlier “We Believe”)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Following the Gospel, we sit, a position of receptivity, to listen to the homily. In the homily the presider makes the Word of God applicable to our daily lives. This is still part of the Liturgy of the Word and is an extension of the Word. It opens the Word up for us to make it more readily understood and assimilated. Usually, the homily is on the Gospel, but it need not be. It can be on any of the readings. Or, if the presider feels that it is beneficial to the community, the homily can be based on any part of the liturgy. The “General Instruction of the Roman Missal” says that the homily “should develop some point of the readings or of another text from the Ordinary or from the Proper of the Mass of the day, and take into account the mystery being celebrated and the needs proper to the listeners.” (GIRM #41)
--Ministry Resource Update, Resource Publications, San Jose, California
In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

OCTOBER -- RESPECT LIFE MONTH

“The awareness that the dying person will soon meet God for all eternity should impel his or her relatives, loved ones, the medical, health-care and religious personnel, to help him or her in this decisive phase of live, with concern that pays attentions to every aspect of existence, including the spiritual.” --John Paul II : Dying With Dignity

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops call upon all of the resources of the Church -- its people, services and institutions -- to work together to build a culture of life. As our culture drifts further away from seeing the inherent dignity of vulnerable humans, including those not yet born, we would do well to reflect on God’s love for them and the lessons they can teach us.
“God’s love does not distinguish between the infant in the mother’s womb or the child or the youth or the adult or the older person. In each on God sees His image and likeness. Human life is a manifestation of God and His glory.”
--Pope Benedict XVI
**Please check out the bulletin boards in church for brochures and information appropriate to Respect Life month.
