29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
October 17/18, 2009

What do you want most from Jesus today?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 10: 42-45): We can often recognize those who are considered great in the world by the number of people they have serving and protecting them. Jesus teaches his disciples that it cannot be like that with them. He has come not to be served but to serve others, especially the poor and those who need healing. His greatness is seen most clearly in his laying down his life for others.
Through Baptism we share in the Church’s ministry to serve all who are in need. We share Christ’s mission of working for peace and justice in our homes, our parish, and our world

Discussion Points: Who are some of the people in today’s world who are considered great? How do they exercise their authority or make their importance felt? In what ways do you think their greatness differs from the greatness described by Jesus? Who are some of the people you have seen exercising Jesus’ kind of greatness? In what ways have you served the needs of others?
Name three ways people your age can model for younger children what it means to be great in the eyes of the Lord.
When and how will you practice that greatness?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus told his disciples that “...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
Adults: What can I do this week to take care of the needs of others?

Children: How can I be a servant to others during the coming week?

RESPECT LIFE MONTH
Words of Life
“The subtle lies of today’s culture of death are a plague of spiritual leprosy, reducing the value of human persons to some arbitrary standard that changes like fashions. … To the world around us, what matters is what we possess, but to the Lord, we matter because we are his beloved children, created in his image, for whom he died, and with whom he wants to live forever in heaven.”
--Rev. John Bartunek, LC, STL, “Why You Matter: A Reflection on Human Dignity,” 2009 Respect Life Program.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Listening
Various end-of-the-world believers often publish their theology on bumper stickers. My favorite: “JESUS IS COMING! LOOK BUSY! In other words, try to look like you’re doing something important. The trouble is that while we are busy looking like we’re doing something important, we aren’t actually doing what’s important. We can feel the difference and God certainly knows the difference. Who do we think we’re fooling by looking busy? And what IS important, anyway? My guess is that what is hardest for all of us is not being busy, but being quiet! The “quiet” moments of the day and of the liturgy are certainly as important as the “busy” moments. Take those few moments to listen to Jesus. We should look for opportunities to be quiet and listen. Perhaps our bumper sticker should read, “DON’T JUST DO SOMETHING! STAND THERE!”
