29TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
World Mission Sunday
Parish Mission Project: St. Jude Academy
October 20/21, 2007

What or who helps you to pray?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 18: 1-8) Just as our first reading was a victory story, so is the parable Jesus tells about the widow and the judge. A lowly widow comes before a judge, seeking her rights. The immoral judge ignores her, but the widow goes on pleading and nagging until he finally decides the case in her favor. He helps the widow not because he is good but because she is persistent. Jesus concludes that if a corrupt judge can do justice to someone who keeps on asking, God, the most just judge of all, will certainly listen to those who persist in prayer.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus himself provides a discussion question for this gospel: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” What do you think? How will you try to be one of these faithful ones?
The widow’s first and last request was not for privilege but for justice. In his encyclical, “On the Development of Peoples,” Pope Paul VI (who was the pope immediately before Pope John Paul II) urged all Catholics and all people of the world to work for both justice and peace. How can you work and pray for justice and peace in our time?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel reading the widow’s faith in God supports her persistence in presenting her case and seeking justice.

Adults: In what ways is my prayer a request, and in what ways is my prayer a conversation with God who seeks me out?

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY -- October 21
“All the Churches for all the world” is the theme for World Mission Sunday 2007. It invites the local Churches of every continent to a shared awareness of the urgent need to relaunch missionary action in the face of the many serious challenges of our time.
--Pope Benedict XVI
Today, World Mission Sunday, with Catholics of the world, we are called to offer, at this Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our generous financial support, through the Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of our Lord -- to help the poor and suffering experience the healing love and peace of Jesus.
•Pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work
•Offer financial help through the Propagation of the Faith

PARISH MISSION PROJECT
St. Jude Academy, Kenya

Teresa Wangechi Kihumba, a retired school teacher, began feeding the small children at home. Before long she was teaching the children as well as feeding them. Today she has seven grades of children and nearly 90 students; about one third of the students are AIDS orphans and so very poor.
Teresa will be telling us a little about the work that she does today. In the future there will be opportunities for us to help St. Jude and to grow spiritually through this wonderful good work.
ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY
The group will travel by car pool to the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Torch on Friday, November 2. We will leave Christ the King Church at 10:00 AM. For more information contact George Bain at 592-3828 or gbain45701@yahoo.com.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
Following the homily, and continuing the Liturgy of the Word, the assembly has an opportunity to respond by professing its faith in the primary doctrines of the Church. Usually the Creed is recited by all together. Most frequently it is the Nicene Creed. Sometimes the Apostles’ Creed is used, especially for Masses with children. During the Easter Season and on some special feasts, such as the Baptism of the Lord, the renewal of Baptismal Promises is used, usually in a dialogue format. Sometimes, for instance, on Easter, this form is accompanied by a sprinkling with holy water to remind us of our baptism.

Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night?

OCTOBER -- RESPECT LIFE MONTH
I believe. . . that our life tends in the end toward a discovery of love, toward receiving love and giving love. And the crucified Christ, who presents us with love lived out to the end, as he himself says in the Gospel of John, lifts this principle up into the realm of absolute reality. God himself is love. In this sense love is indeed both the fundamental rule and the ultimate aim of life. . . Human love always lays claim to eternity. Love contradicts death.
... This human love is turned from a promise into a fulfillment of reality only when it is wrapped in a love that can truly impart eternity. [Love] is what we are looking for and is the goal toward which our lives are directed. But within its own framework and on its own terms it directs our view toward God and brings us to wait upon God.
--a reflection by Pope Benedict XVI from A Novena for Life
