"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

29TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
October 21-22, 2006

How do you serve your family? Your parish? Your neighbors?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 10:42-45): We can often recognize those who are considered great in the world by the number of people they have serving and protecting them. Jesus teaches his disciples that it cannot be like that with them. He has come not to be served but to serve others, especially the poor and those who need healing. His greatness is seen most clearly in his laying down his life for others.
Through Baptism we share in the Church’s ministry to serve all who are in need. We share Christ’s mission of working for peace and justice in our homes, our parish, and our world.
Discussion Points for Gospel: Who are some of the people in today’s world who are considered great? How do they exercise their authority or make their importance felt? In what ways do you think their greatness differs from the greatness described by Jesus? Who are some of the people you have seen exercising Jesus’ kind of greatness? In what ways have you served the needs of others?
Name three ways people your age can model for younger children what it means to be great in the eyes of the Lord.
When and how will you practice that greatness? (from Sadlier "We Believe")

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
29th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Jesus tells the apostles in today’s Gospel that if they want to be great, they cannot follow the worldly example and values of secular authorities who rule by a power that dominates. The way to greatness in the Reign of God is service. Consider the following:
Adults: How do I respond to the temptation to use power over others rather than to serve their needs?
Children: What is one way this week that I can help others, just as Jesus wants me to do?

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY -- October 22

RESPECT LIFE

“Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them ‘Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.’ Could Jesus’ words from Mark’s Gospel make it any clearer how we are to treat God’s gift of innocent life?
