THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN IN ORDINARY TIME
October 24/25, 2009

When does being Jesus’ disciple require courage?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 10: 46-52): When someone calls attention to himself in a crowd, others sometimes say, “Stop making a spectacle of yourself!” In today’s gospel story, it is the blind beggar Bartimaeus who is irritating the crowd. He is shouting so persistently to Jesus that the people are embarrassed by this public display of neediness. They attempt to shush him. But Bartimaeus shouts, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Jesus hears the beggar’s plea and restores his sight. He tells Bartimaeus that his own faith has healed him.
We all suffer from blindness of one kind or another because we fail to see things as Jesus does. “I want to see” should be our daily prayer to him.

Discussion Points: Why do you think the crowd was so irritated by the blind beggar’s behavior? What experiences do you have of people being embarrassed by those who are odd or different? How does Bartimaeus respond to the complaints of the crowd? How does Jesus’s response differ from the crowd’s? Why do you think Jesus heals Bartimaeus?
What are some of the influences in our society that weaken our ability to see as Jesus does? What kinds of blindness might people your age experience? How can you improve your spiritual eyesight?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Those who follow Jesus must have their eyes opened as Bartimaeus did. They must use both eyes and heart to recognize the needs of those around them and the opportunities to build God's kingdom.
Adults: Is there someone outside of my immediate circle of family and friends God is calling me to serve?

Children: How can I show God's love to others, even when I do not know them too well?

RESPECT LIFE MONTH
Words of Life
“The bishops’ conference views health care as a basic right belong to all human beings, from conception to natural death… Much-needed reform must not become a vehicle for promoting an ‘abortion rights’ agenda or reversing longstanding current policies against federal abortion mandates and funding. In this sense, we urge you to make this legislation ‘abortion neutral’ by preserving longstanding federal policies that prevent government promotion of abortion and respect conscience rights.”
– Justin Cardinal Rigali, Letter to members of House Energy and Commerce Committee, July 29, 2009.

HOLY HOUR - This Monday, October 26, there will be a Holy Hour with Father Tim Shannon, Vocations Director. It will be held in our daily Mass chapel from 7:00 - 8:00 PM. The theme is “What do you want of me, Lord?” Refreshments will be served following the Holy Hour.

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We will have our Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church beginning next weekend. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.
“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES

Halloween
Have you noticed that much more seems to be made of Halloween these days? Elaborate outdoor decorations on houses seem almost to rival Christmas. We can be happy that so much attention is given to this night. It is one of the few Christian vigils to survive. Certainly there are many trappings of the day that derive from pagan customs, but at its root the Eve of All Hallows, with its ghosts and skeletons and cemetery symbols, points to the heavenly Jerusalem which is our destiny along with all the saints of God. Remember, October 31st , Halloween, is the Vigil of November 1st, the Feast of All Saints.
