"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

30TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
October 28-29, 2006

Who helps you to correct your vision? To see your blind spots?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 10:46-52): When someone calls attention to himself in a crowd, others sometimes say, “Stop making a spectacle of yourself!” In today’s gospel story, it is the blind beggar Bartimaeus who is irritating the crowd. He is shouting so persistently to Jesus that the people are embarrassed by this public display of neediness. They attempt to shush him. But Bartimaeus shouts, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Jesus hears the beggar’s plea and restores his sight. He tells Bartimaeus that his own faith has healed him.
We all suffer from blindness of one kind or another because we fail to see things as Jesus does. “I want to see” should be our daily prayer to him.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Why do you think the crowd was so irritated by the blind beggar’s behavior? What experiences do you have of people being embarrassed by those who are odd or different? How does Bartimaeus respond to the complaints of the crowd? How does Jesus’s response differ from the crowd’s? Why do you think Jesus heals Bartimaeus?
What are some of the influences in our society that weaken our ability to see as Jesus does? What kinds of blindness might people your age experience? How can you improve your spiritual eyesight? (from Sadlier "We Believe")

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
30th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. (Mark 10:51-52)
Adults: What are the blind spots that keep me from seeing the humanity of my neighbor?
Children: If I was blind and asked Jesus to heal me, what is the first thing that I would want to see?

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Thank you for your generosity on World Mission Sunday! Our parish offered $319.00 to the Propagation of the Faith for the missionary work of the Church. This is a real blessing for the Missions! Please continue to pray for missionaries -- and for the people to whom they bring the “Good News” of Jesus. May God bless you for your generous missionary spirit!

The latest LIVING FAITH issue is now available. Come to the Gathering Space to pick up one of these FREE prayer and reflections booklets.
On the Feast of All Saints, we honor those men and women who -- whether they’ve been canonized or not -- have led lives of heroic virtue that set an example for all Christians. They have truly witnessed to their faith. Although no two saints are alike (just as no two people are exactly alike), there are certain qualities that they all share.
This day is the harvest homecoming of the church. Through the image of autumn’s ingathering, we celebrate and honor the saints.
Halloween is the night of October 31. The word means “Hallow’s Eve.” “Hallows” is another word for saints. November 1 is All Saints’ Day. November 2 is All Souls’ Day. Together these days once were call “Hallowmas.”
So Halloween isn’t just the way we end October. It also is the way we begin November. On Halloween night -- the holy eve of All Saints’ Day -- we begin the church’s month to remember the dead.

RESPECT LIFE

One of the statements heard over and over by those in post-abortion ministry from those who have aborted their children is, “I can’t believe I did this. How could I have paid for them to kill my child?” Heartbreaking but compelling testimony to the truth that in every abortion there are two victims -- mother and child. (Theresa Bonopartis in Partners for Life newsletter, 11/05)

November 11-12 Habitat Collection.
For many years, Christ the King University Parish has been a partner in the Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Coalition for Athens County. We also have many members of the parish who are very active on several of the committees for Habitat. In addition, we have supported Habitat through our parish Lenten offerings. For some reason, parish particip ation this past Lent was not consistent with our recent efforts to help the poor and homeless and we were far short of our goal of $2,000.
Envelopes for this collection are in the Gathering Space and at the small bulletin board. Please help.

Cards & notes can be sent to Marge Ruman at Crestview Nursing Home, 957 Beck's Knob Road, Lancaster.
