ALL SOULS DAY
November 1/2, 2008

What is your vision of the new life God promises?

Gospel Reflection (John 11:21-27): We know that we will die just as Jesus knew he would die. What does this gospel mean then? Jesus is telling us some wonderful news: for those who believe, death is not an end but a beginning. It is a passage to a new life that is so extraordinary we can’t begin to imagine it. We saw a hint of this new life on Easter. Death does not win. Life wins.

Discussion Points for Gospel: How can we help others believe that “life wins!”? What are your expectations of this new life? Try to imagine what this new life would be like.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.
“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Reverent Reception of Holy Communion

As we approach in humility to receive Holy Communion, we recognize what we receive and who we are to become. We approach in reverence, placing one hand on top of the other, and say the “Amen” with conviction and energy. We reverently take the host with the other hand and place it in our mouths as nourishment for our spirits. Likewise we take the cup with both hands, drink slowly, and carefully return the cup to the minister. Our actions and spoken words show the importance of what we do.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP -- Please vote November 4
The Catholic approach to faithful citizenship begins with moral principles. The directions for our public witness are found in Scripture and Catholic social teaching. Below are key themes from Catholic social teaching. Please see www.usccb/org/sdwp/projects/socialteaching/excerpt.htm for a description of these themes.
1. Life and Dignity of the Human Person
2. Call to Family, Community, and Participation
3. Rights and Responsibilities
4. Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
5. Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
6. Solidarity
7. Caring for God’s Creation

NOVEMBER 1: ALL SAINTS
On the feast of All Saints, we honor those men and women who, whether they’ve been canonized or not, have led lives of heroic virtue that set an example for all Christians. They have truly witnessed to their faith. Although no two saints are alike (just as no two people are exactly alike), there are certain qualities that they all share. This day is the harvest homecoming of the church. Through the image of autumn’s ingathering, we celebrate and honor the saints.
Halloween is the night of October 31. The word means “Hallow’s Eve.” “Hallows” is another word for saints. November 1 is All Saints’ Day. November 2 is All Souls’ Day. Together these days once were call “Hallowmas.”
So Halloween isn’t just the way we end October. It also is the way we begin November. On Halloween night - the holy eve of All Saints’ Day - we begin the church’s month to remember the dead.

PEACE AND JUSTICE MINISTRY
The Peace and Justice group of CTK would like to thank all those who participated in the Stand Up Speak Out Against Poverty and for the millennium development goals. Your photos and petitions will be forwarded to Jubilee USA. We ask all parishioners to join with us and millions of others around the world in saying:
To the leaders of the wealthy countries--
We urge you to keep your promises on poverty -- debt relief, more and better aid, trade justice and gender equality.
To the leaders of all countries -- make it your first responsibility to save the lives of your poorest citizens. We ask you to tackle inequality, to be accountable to your people, to govern fairly and justly, to fight corruption and to uphold human rights.
Today, and every day, we will stand up and take action against poverty. We will continue the fight against poverty and inequality and to hold leaders in every part of the world, faithful to their promises.
We are asking for justice. We are millions of voices standing in solidarity to say, no more excuses - end poverty now
