THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
November 3/4, 2007

Zacchaeus climbed the tree to see Jesus, and came down to be with Jesus.
What more do you need to be closer to Jesus?

   Gospel Reflection (Luke 19:1-10) The incident in today’s gospel may well be a God’s eye view of each one of us! We are all “little,” like Zaccheus, trying to see Jesus from a distance, and often getting ourselves up into trees or into other difficult situations and needing Jesus to come by and call us back down to earth, back down to an honest relationship with him. “When you come down from there, and admit your need,” says Jesus, “we’ll talk, heart to heart.”

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Try to see this story from the point of view of Zaccheus. What kind of person was he? What kind of job did he have? Was he respected by others? Feared? Well-liked? Trusted? Why would Jesus want to be his friend? At what exact point, do you think, did Zaccheus change? What brought him joy? What did he do to show that he had changed?
   How are you like the “old Zaccheus,” before he met Jesus? How are you like the “new Zaccheus,” after he was found and saved by Jesus?
   After you have read this story, what do you think about Jesus? Would you like Jesus to “come to your house?” (Hint: If you ask him to, he will!)

Sunday Scripture Readings
     Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
     To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

   Today’s Gospel makes it clear that Jesus’ welcome extends to all. We are called to release our notions of “in” and “out” and see everyone as our brothers and sisters.

Adults: Who do I know that could use my helping hand or listening ear?

Children: How can I be a better friend to others this week?

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
   During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
   We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
   Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

ELECTION DAY: NOVEMBER 6
Be prepared to vote!

Please visit the Catholic Conference website (http://www.ohiocathconf.org/) for information about the various issues on the ballot this year from the perspective of our faith. It is informative, challenging and nonpartisan.
   In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation.
--Faithful Citizenship
“Don’t miss Newman’s Bake Sale after all the Masses on Sunday, the 11th. It’s bound to be GREAT!!!”

VETERANS’ DAY
   Sunday, November 11, is a day set aside to remember those men and women who served in our Armed Forces. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war. A law adopted in 1938 made the day a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. We offer prayers of gratitude for all our veterans.

STUDY TABLES
   We are offering the Parish Center as a place for quiet study time in preparation for finals. On the evenings of Wednesday-Friday, November 14-16, and Sunday/Monday, November 18/19, you will be able to use the library, lounge or one of the meeting rooms for study. There will be a variety of drinks and healthy snacks available.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
   Members will meet at the CTK Parish Center on Monday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m.
CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA
   The November meeting of the CLC is Monday, the 12th, 6:30 p.m. at CTK. It will be a potluck Thanksgiving dinner. Call Jody, 797-2266 or Barbara, 797-4316 for regrets.
PRAYER/MEDITATION BOOKLETS
   The new Living Faith booklets are available at the bulletin boards in church. The months of October, November and December are included in this issue.
   We also have available the November issue of Living with Christ. These particular booklets are very well done. Each issue is $2.00, or you can purchase a yearly subscription for $15.00; contact the office for more information.

LITURGY BYTES & BITS
   There is a format to the General Intercessions which is specified by the “General Instruction to the Roman Missal.” The general rule is that “the sequence of intentions is to be:
   a. for the needs of the Church;
   b. for public authorities and the salvation of the        world;
   c. for those oppressed by any need;
   d. for the local community.” (GIRM #46)
   This last section includes special intentions that have to do with specific celebrations, such as a baptism or first communions. This is the spot for our prayers for those among us who are sick or who have died.
