"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

31ST SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
November 4/5, 2006

How do you answer “Who is my neighbor” in words? In your deeds?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 12:28-34): In this reading, Jesus is asked to name “the first of all the commandments.” In the first part of his reply, Jesus quotes the words from today’s first reading: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Then Jesus adds another commandment from Leviticus 19:18: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus made the two commandments one. We now call this the Great Commandment. Loving God and loving neighbor cannot be separated. We love God by loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. The proof and measure of how we love God is shown in how much we love others.

Discussion Points for Gospel: God is our Father. What are some specific ways we can express our love for God by loving our brothers and sisters? Name some ways or times that loving others is a joyful experience. Name some ways or times that loving others can cost us time, effort, and inconvenience. (from Sadlier "We Believe")

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
30th Sunday of Ordinary Time

With his response to the scribe about the first of all commandments (see Mark 12:28b-34), Jesus basically repeated the law that the Jewish people knew was written in Deuteronomy and Numbers. But Jesus adds a twist in two ways. First, the law is not external but is written in the hearts of believers. Secondly, living this law of love makes the Reign of God visible on earth.

Adults: How does my love of god spill out in my relationships with other people?

Children: How can I show God's love to people around me?

November 11-12 Habitat Collection

For many years, Christ the King University Parish has been a partner in the Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Coalition for Athens County.
We also have many members of the parish who are very active on several of the committees for Habitat. In addition, we have supported Habitat through our parish Lenten offerings. For some reason, parish participation this past Lent was not consistent with our recent efforts to help the poor and homeless, and we were far short of our goal of $2,000.
Envelopes for this collection are in the Gathering Space and at the small bulletin board. Please help.
RESPECT LIFE
As we exercise our precious right to vote this Tuesday, we would do well to remember that if a candidate is wrong on abortion, no matter how right they may be on other issues, such a candidate cannot be supported. To permit abortion but to cry out for the right to work, education, etc. is to say that these rights belong to some people but not to all. They obviously do not belong to those who were snuffed out by abortion. --Fr. Frank Pavone
