THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
November 7/8, 2009

What inspires you to be generous?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 12:41-44): In this reading we have the story of another widow who gave generously. Many rich people gave far more; she gave only two small copper coins not worth very much. But Jesus was moved by what she did and praised her to his disciples. She gave all that she had to live on.
God loves generosity. Nothing is more moving to the heart of Jesus than our willingness to give of ourselves to help others.

Discussion Points: This story has had an impact upon our Catholic life, even in its vocabulary. At one time, boxes used for Lenten offerings at home were called “mite boxes” to remind us of the small but generous gift of this widow who gave her last mite.
Why do we admire people who “give their all”? What does “giving my all” mean to me in my life? Do I give my all to my family? to my studies? to sports? What does it mean to “give my all” to God?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirty-second Sunday of Ordinary Time

If we read the newspapers with the lens of today’s Gospel, it seems that self-interest and self-promotion dominate most of life. Yet we know from our experience of other people that authentic generosity is still alive.
Adults: Whose way of life has helped me know and understand the possibilities for generous self-sacrifice?

Children: When was I surprised at how good someone was to me? How did that help me to be good to others?

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

THE BISHOP IS HERE! -- Bishop Conlon's pastoral visit to Athens offers an inter-generational opportunity to learn as a household. He will be addressing the Mission of the Church.
You are invited to share in a potluck followed by a presentation for adults and teens. While the adults meet, the catechetical staff will lead lessons prepared for children in grades 1-8; childcare is offered for preschoolers. The program will be offered three times: 6:30 PM Saturday, November 7; 12:30 PM Sunday, November 8; and 5:30 PM Tuesday, November 10. RE classes have been canceled so as to encourage families to attend a session with the Bishop.

This will be shown at the First United Methodist Church, 2 South College Street, Athens on Sunday, November 8, at 4 PM in the Sanctuary. Free parking is at the City Parking Garage. VETERANS’ DAY -- Wednesday, November 11
This is a day set aside to remember those men and women who served in our Armed Forces. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war. A law adopted in 1938 made the day a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. We offer prayers of gratitude for all our veterans.
