DEDICATION OF THE
LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME
November 8/9, 2008

How does your parish exercise stewardship?

Gospel Reflection (John 2:13-22): Today’s gospel presents a rare picture of Jesus expressing his anger at the misuse of the Temple. Merchants had turned the house of prayer into a marketplace for buying and selling. Jesus overturned their money tables and drove them out of the Temple. Jesus’ reaction helps us to realize how easily we can get our priorities mixed up. The merchants had surely lost sight of why people came to the Temple. It was built to be the people’s holy place and visiting it was their time to worship the Lord; it was not intended as a place to do business. This bad practice probably started small and increased over a period of time.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Who or what helps you when you find your priorities mixed up? How can we keep bad habits from gaining a foothold in our lives? When does anger seem justified? When is anger not justified?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome

The worship of God and our relationships to each other are connected. What we do in a church building is related to the rest of our lives. Jesus insists that before we offer our gift on the altar we must first heal our broken relationships.

Adults: Do I realize that my worship in church loses its validity if it does not influence the way I live? What must I change before I pray?

Children: How do I need to love better?
NEWMAN-SPONSORED

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And Let perpetual light shine upon them
May they rest in peace. Amen.
May their souls and the souls of all the
Faithful departed through the mercy of God
rest in peace. Amen

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Reverencing the Sacred Blood

The Church encourages us to receive both the Sacred Body and the Sacred Blood in Holy Communion. This is how Christ instituted it. This is the fuller sign of the meal. Sometimes, there are reasons we do not receive from the cup. Perhaps we are sick and out of courtesy want to avoid the possibility of sharing our illness with others. Still, simply ignoring the cup and walking past does not honor Christ in his real presence there. One possibility is to take the cup, acknowledge it with a bow of the head, and then return it to the minister without drinking. This honors Christ’s presence in the sacred cup and also maintains the reverence of the communion procession.

DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN LATERAN
Most Catholics think of St. Peter’s as the pope’s main church, but they are wrong. St. John Lateran is the pope’s church, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides.
The first basilica on the site was built in the fourth century when Constantine donated land he had received from the wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its successors suffered fire, earthquake and the ravages of war, but the Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated until the popes returned from Avignon in the 14th century to find the church and the adjoining palace in ruins.
Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646. One of Rome’s most imposing churches, the Lateran’s towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal statues of Christ, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and 12 doctors of the Church. Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the small wooden table on which tradition holds St. Peter himself celebrated Mass.
Unlike the commemorations of other Roman churches, this anniversary is a feast. The dedication of a church is a feast for all its parishioners. St. John Lateran is, in a sense, the parish church of all Catholics, for it is the pope’s parish, the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome. This church is the spiritual home of the people who are the Church.
--from AmericanCatholic.org Saint of the Day

VETERANS’ DAY is a day set aside to remember those men and women who served in our Armed Forces. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war. A law adopted in 1938 made the day a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. We offer prayers of gratitude for all our veterans.

DONATION FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Today the parish will present to the Faith Build Coalition for Athens County Habitat for Humanity with a check for $3,566.90. This represents the sum collected during the past year; especially through our Lenten project for donations; a record amount.   The Faith Build Coalition has built 5 homes since 2000 and it working on a 6th home. CTK has been part of every project. We are a Covenant Church with Habitat: this means that we promise to support Habitat not only with our donations, but also with our prayers and our help. We thank Habitat for allowing us to be part of this wonderful work; as a parish we have benefited tremendously.
PEACE AND JUSTICE MINISTRY is celebrating our parish’s membership in Bread for the World as a Covenant Church this weekend. Please stop by the Bread for the World display before or after Mass to learn more about their work against hunger.
