"Mission to Serve": New Orleans Diary

32ND SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
November 11/12, 2006

In what ways does your parish care for the poor? For the rich?
Gospel Reflection (Mark 12:41-44): In this reading we have the story of another widow who gave generously. Many rich people gave far more; she gave only two small copper coins not worth very much. But Jesus was moved by what she did and praised her to his disciples. She gave all that she had to live on.
God loves generosity. Nothing is more moving to the heart of Jesus than our willingness to give of ourselves to help others.

Discussion Points for Gospel: This story has had an impact upon our Catholic life, even in its vocabulary. At one time, boxes used for Lenten offerings at home were called “mite boxes” to remind us of the small but generous gift of this widow who gave her last mite.
Why do we admire people who “give their all”? What does “giving my all” mean to me in my life? Do I give my all to my family? to my studies? to sports? What does it mean to “give my all” to God? (
from Sadlier "We Believe")

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Gospel contrasts the hypocrisy and pride of the scribes with the generosity of the poor widow. Concern with worldly success and consumerism blinds us to the true meaning of discipleship. It raises a question for us to ponder: Who is truly "great" in God's eyes? Jesus teaches that what really matters is the spirit and inner attitude behind our actions.

Adults: What lies at the core of my own generosity to others?

Children: How might I respond to the poor and homeless of the world?

BAPTISM
We welcome with great joy Fabiola Cecilia-Ann Keesey, newly-born today through the waters of Baptism! She is the daughter of Christopher and Ingrid Keesey.

VETERANS’ DAY
Saturday, November 11, is a day set aside to remember those men and women who served in our Armed Forces. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war. A law adopted in 1938 made the day a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
We offer prayers of gratitude for all our veterans.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
On Sunday, November 12, 4:30 p.m. or Tuesday, November 14, at 6:30 there will be a meeting for First Reconciliation parents. The topic for discussion is “Reconciliation: celebrating God’s forgiveness.”

RESPECT LIFE
Abortion and euthanasia threaten our democracy “because the rule of law is jeopardized and the public moral culture that makes democracy possible is corrupted when moral wrongs are declared ‘rights.’ Democracy cannot long endure when one class of citizens takes for itself the ‘right’ to declare other human beings outside the community of common protection and concern.” -- Columnist George Weigel
