THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
November 14/15, 2009

How does Jesus’ Second Coming affect the way you live each day?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 13:24-32): In this reading we look forward to the day of Jesus’ second coming. We do not know the day or the hour of his coming; only God knows. Meanwhile, as Jesus has repeatedly taught us, we must watch and wait for him in faith, hope, and love. In the hour we least expect him, he warns, he will come.
Let us pray in today’s liturgy for ourselves and for the whole Church, that the Lord may find us ready when he returns. May we not be doing foolish things or be living in fear, but be awaiting the kingdom with hope as we strive to do God’s will.

Discussion Points: One day, Saint Thomas Aquinas, the great teacher and philosopher, and his Dominican brothers were gathered for their hour of recreation. They were all talking, laughing, and enjoying one another’s company before going back to their work, prayer, and study. Someone asked Saint Thomas, “If the world were to end in fifteen minutes, what would you do?” He replied, “I would continue doing exactly what I am doing right now.”
Why do you think Saint Thomas said this? How can you be ready for Jesus to come again?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirty-third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Jesus reminds his listeners that the fig tree ultimately buds in the spring and yields a bounty of fruit. This image underlines the focus of the Gospel. Even in the midst of suffering and death, we can hope and trust in God’s blessings.
Adults: What signs of hope and promise to I see in my life?

Children: When has Jesus helped me the most?

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
