THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
November 17/18, 2007

How do you hold on to faith and help others to trust when bad things happen?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 21:5-19) Jesus warns his followers not to be deceived about the end of the world. The signs of the end (wars, earthquakes, famines) will occur repeatedly. Christians will be persecuted and will not be able to trust even some of their own family members. But Jesus will not abandon them. He will give them the right words to speak when they are on trial. By enduring whatever suffering comes, his disciples will be saved. Though their bodies may be persecuted, their spirits will remain unharmed.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus says two seemingly contradictory things: “Some of you will be put to death” and “Not a hair of your head will be harmed.” Jesus is warning us of terrible things that may happen. Yet because he is with us, we will not be harmed. Not even death can harm us! Jesus has taken us beyond death, and has saved our lives for all eternity. We do not know when the end of the world will come. We do not know when our own death, our own “end of the world as we know it,” will come. What does your faith in Jesus tell you about the end of the world? What does your faith tell you about your personal “end of your world” that we call death? How does your faith in Jesus help you to proclaim your faith in words and actions, no matter what the consequences? (--Sadlier “We Believe" www.webelieveweb.com)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

It is easy to become overwhelmed with the events and news stories of our lives. Today’s Gospel reminds us that, through it all, God is standing by our side. This is cause for great hope.

Adults: What can I do to foster the virtue of hope in my life?

Children: How can I show others that God loves them?

Thanksgiving
“Let us give thanks and praise.”
A holiday made for the Eucharist and for prayer. This year we will gather for the Eucharist at St. Paul’s at 9:00 am. For all God’s many gifts, let us give thanks! Please make plans to be there!
MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And Let perpetual light shine upon them
May they rest in peace. Amen.
May their souls and the souls of all the
Faithful departed through the mercy of God
rest in peace. Amen

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Life at the poverty line leaves nearly 40 million Americans hanging on for dear life--hanging on to feed their families and to keep a roof over their heads. The CCHD supporst self-help projects of people working together to break the cycle of poverty. You can make a difference. Be part of the numbers that care--give generously to CCHD in TODAY’S collection.

 KIDS’ RETREAT

To celebrate Mary’s “Yes” to be the mother of Jesus, there will be a Kids’ Retreat at Christ the King in the Parish Center on Saturday, December 8 (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception). The retreat begins at 9:30 and will end at 11:30. Bring your children for a day of fun and learning! Register by December 2; registration forms are available in the Gathering Space.
MARRIAGE PREPARATION

Couples planning marriage in the Catholic Church are required to attend marriage preparation. The next session at Christ the King church is scheduled for Friday, January 11, AND Friday and Saturday, February 15/16, 2008. Contact the parish office to register or for more information.
The Giving Tree will be set up in the Gathering Space next weekend, November 24-25. This year needy families with children have been referred to us by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. We hope to provide one gift for each of the families’ children and a basket of non-perishable foods for the families themselves. Please stop by after Mass next week and pick a tag to help a family who is in need this Christmas time. To complete the tags you will write your name and phone number on the tear-off portion of the tag and drop that part in the green box before leaving the Gathering Space.
DOLL HOUSE RAFFLE FOR HABITAT
The Faith Build Coalition of Athens County Habitat for Humanity is conducting a raffle for a superb doll house, with a drawing on December 10. There are pictures of the doll house in the Parish Center bulletin board. Tickets range from one for $5 up to 10 for $20. Contact George Bain (592-3828 or gbain45701@yahoo.com) to take a chance and to help build the next house.
WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?
Why do Catholics believe in Purgatory?

Jesus said, "Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come" (Matthew 12:31). And 2 Maccabees 12:46 reads, "Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin." When we die in God's friendship we eventually go to Heaven, but if we haven't properly atoned for certain sins we have to be purified in Purgatory first. We pray for the souls in Purgatory to help them pass through faster than they would otherwise.

RESPECT LIFE

We as a society must offer as much protection as we can to the ‘least of these.’”
--Senator Sam Brownback, NRL News, 8/07
