FEAST OF OUR LORD
CHRIST THE KING
November 22/23, 2008

Jesus calls us to visit those in need. Whom will you visit this week?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew: 25:31-46): Today, on the feast of Christ the King, we read that a ruler or leader should be like a shepherd. The leader is to care for all the people and protect them. And a wise and loving ruler knows that what is important for the people is equally important for their leader. In today’s gospel, the ruler is also a judge. At the last judgment, Christ is pictured as the king who judges the nations. How does he judge? On the basis of care and concern for the needy. Did you notice in the gospel that all the people were surprised at the king’s answer to their questions? How lucky we are to have Jesus tell us what they did not seem to know, that when we do for others, we do to him, and that we will be judged on our works of mercy and justice. Take a moment to think about these works that the gospel mentions. Ask Christ to reign and rule in your heart and in the whole world.

Discussion Points for Gospel: In this reading, what criteria does the ruler/judge use to separate the good and evil ones? List the actions, called Works of Mercy, that are rewarded in this story. List the actions that are not rewarded. Those who were brought into the kingdom and those who were excluded asked the same question. What was the question? What was the answer? What truth is being suggested? What does the king say at the end of both judgments? Who are “the least” referred to in this story?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Feast of Our Lord Christ the King

Each and every day we ask of God the Father in the Lord's Prayer, "Thy kingdom come. . . "

Adults: How well do I understand the connection between praying "Thy kingdom come" and acting ("thy will be done") in a way that brings it about?

Children: How carefully do I think about what I am saying each day when I pray the Lord's Prayer?
MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during November.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And Let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

May their souls and the souls of all the
Faithful departed through the mercy of God
rest in peace. Amen

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
Today’s solemnity, the celebration of our Savior’s kingship, echoes Ascension Day, Epiphany and Palm Sunday — all ancient celebrations of Christ’s royal rule. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to the destructive forces of the world at that time: the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, the rise of Fascism in Italy, the loss of political power for the Church in most countries, and the rampant materialism of the “roaring twenties.” Times and politics change, and the day is seen less as a medicine and more are a fitting way to remember the End Time.
--1994 Sourcebook (LTP)
The feast affirms the sovereignty and rule of Christ over persons, families, human society, the state, the whole universe, and in particular affirms the messianic kingship of Christ. The Feast of Christ the King is an idea-feast -- it celebrates no specific event in history but rather the feast honors our Savior Himself under the title of king.

PARISH FOOD DRIVE: The Religious Education program is sponsoring a Food Drive at both parishes to benefit St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and My Sister’s Place. We are collecting non-perishable items from Sunday, November 23, until Sunday, December 14.
Although all types of food are acceptable, we are particularly looking for donations of peanut butter, tuna fish, children’s lunch snacks, cans of fruit. Put items in boxes at the doors of church or in the Msgr. Kish Hall at St. Paul or the Christ the King University Parish Center. If you would like to involve your place of business in the food drive, make a monetary donation or have a question or concerns please contact Nicole Baum Nicole@eduusa.org or Nancy Denhart ndenhart@ctkathens.org or phone: 590-3302.
CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP meets today Sunday, November 23, at Christ the King to help with the St. Vincent de Paul pantry. Dress for the weather and bring gloves. Meet the team leaders in the Parish Center Lounge.
ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY will celebrate First Friday Mass at CTK on December 5 at 5:15 pm. After Mass we will have our annual Christmas potluck in the Parish Center. We will then have a Christmas music program. Sign up on the sheets posted on the bulletin boards in church and the PC.
CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA will hold their annual Christmas dinner on Monday evening, December 8, at 6:30. Contact Jean Edwards at 592-1428, or Trudy Montle, 69-4185, for more information or for regrets.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Standing Together after Holy Communion

Communion is a sign and a bond of our unity with God and with each other. It is not a private time with Christ, but a unity between God and ALL of us together. Some parishes show this by having everyone stand until all have received. This makes clear that we are all “in this together.” Those who have received stand in solidarity with those who are still receiving.

RESPECT LIFE
“Abortion is the leading cause of death in the black community. People are not aware of that. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control Abortion Surveillance Report, 35% of abortions in the United States are performed on African-American women, who make up only 12% of the U.S. population.”

THE GIVING TREE PROJECT, 2008
The Giving Tree will be set up in the Gathering Space next weekend, November 29-30. Again this year, needy families with children have been referred to us by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Together with St. Paul’s Parish we hope to provide one gift for each of the families’ children and a basket of non-perishable food items for the families themselves. Please stop by the Giving Tree after Mass next week or the following week and pick a gift tag to help a family in our community who is in need this Christmas season. To complete the tags you will write your name and phone number on the tear-off portion of the tag and drop that part in the green box before leaving the Gathering Space.
