FEAST OF
CHRIST THE KING
November 25/26, 2006

When do you find the truth a comfort? When is it a challenge in your life?
Gospel Reflection (John 18: 33b-37): What kind of king is Jesus? In this reading from the passion story in John’s Gospel, Jesus provides us with his own answer. Pontius Pilate was the Roman official who held power in Palestine. He asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews. Pilate really wants to know whether Jesus might be part of a Jewish revolt against Roman rule. Jesus assures Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. He is not one who rules by force. However he is a king who came into the world to “testify to the truth.” All who recognize him as “the way and the truth and the life” will hear his voice (John 14:6).
As the Church year comes to a close, we are grateful for the ways in which we have heard our King’s voice in the liturgy this year. We consider how to live the words of Jesus more faithfully as the circle of the new liturgical year begins.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Trial scenes are often dramatized in movies and on TV. Imagine that you are a Roman soldier who is present at Pilate’s official residence as the prisoner Jesus of Nazareth is being questioned. What might you think when you heard Jesus’ answer to Pilate’s question, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Why might you be surprised when you heard Jesus describe his kingdom? How might you respond when you heard why Jesus had come into the world? How do you think you would feel about this prisoner-king who was facing a possible death sentence?
What are some of the ways people your age can show that they are committed to Jesus as the way, the truth and the life? How can you give evidence that Jesus rules in your life? (

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Feast of Christ the King

In today's Gospel Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not an earthly one such as Pilate is thinking. He invites Pilate (and us) to think about worldly power in an entirely new way.

Adults: To what extent are my social views and values formed by Jesus' teaching about the kingdom of God?

Children: In what way can I pray this week for those who are in positions of leadership in the world?

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
The feast affirms the sovereignty and rule of Christ over persons, families, human society, the state, the whole universe, and in particular affirms the messianic kingship of Christ. The Feast of Christ the King is an idea-feast — celebrates no specific event in history but rather the feast honors our Savior Himself under the title of king.

Thoughtful Moments -- What does Advent mean?
When a special guest is coming to visit, children love waiting by the window to be the first to announce the expected arrival. Advent is much like that. We prepare for our special guest by going to Confession and doing penance to cleanse our souls. Then we wait by the window so we can joyfully announce his arrival.

THE ANNUAL GIVING TREE PROJECT
Please visit the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space. This year needy families with children have been referred to us by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Along with St. Paul’s Parish we will be providing gifts for 42 area families in need this year. The number of requests underscores the economic distress of many families in our community. Please join the other members of our parish in this opportunity to extend Christ’s love to our neighbors.
We hope to provide one gift for each of the families’ children and a basket of non-perishable foods for the families themselves. Please stop by after Mass this week and pick a tag to help a family who is in need this Christmas time.
Please note: this year the tags have changed. You will write your name and phone number on the tear-off portion of the tag and drop that part in the green box before leaving the Gathering Space. Drop off your gifts at the Parish Center TV Room before noon on Sunday, December 10.

RESPECT LIFE
In every child which is born and in every person who lives or dies we see the image of God’s glory. We celebrate this glory in every human being, a sign of the living God, an icon of Jesus Christ.
