Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 1/2, 2007

What will you do to “stay awake” to the Lord’s presence during Advent?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 24: 37-44) In today’s gospel, we are asked to live in the present with an eye toward the future. We are not to be totally absorbed by the usual activities of life. We are to remain open to the coming of the Lord, and be prepared. Here Jesus compares himself to a thief who breaks in when no one is looking! Jesus wants us to be prepared so that we can welcome him, not as a thief, but as our long-awaited Savior!

Discussion Points for Gospel:
"Sometimes it is hard for us to believe that what we do today matters for tomorrow and, really, for all eternity. Can you think of some examples of the way your actions today will matter for tomorrow and forever? How does what you do today help prepare you and the world for the coming of Christ? Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
First Sunday of Advent

In today’s first reading the prophet Isaiah proclaims to the people of God that the peace and security they seek will come about when they and all nations follow the way of the Lord.

Adults: When have I turned to the wisdom of man and turned away from the wisdom of God to solve my problems? What were the results?

Children: When do I ask Jesus to help me live as his friend and disciple?

BLESSING FOR AN ADVENT WREATH

Blessed are you, our God, Creator of myriad stars that twinkle in the dark of Advent nights And the blaze of color that heralds the dawn of Advent days.
Blessed are you who have given us this evergreen crown to adorn with glowing candles.
As we watch and pray around this Advent wreath, set our souls ablaze with the justice announced by your prophets. Fill our hearts with the fire of love kindled by the coming of the world’s true Light, Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever.
Amen.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER MEMORIALS
We are accepting donations and memorials for Christmas flowers. Please send in your donations no later than December 19 for inclusion in the bulletin.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS MASS
Choir practice will take place on Sundays, December 2, 9, 16 and 23, from 6:00-7:15 p.m. Children wishing to sing at the 5:15 Mass should attend these practices. Contact Nancy Sand for more information.

KIDS’ RETREAT

St. Jude Academy Mission Project begins!
In the Gathering Space today there are two items for your attention. There are pictures of children who are available for sponsorship. Tuition and meals for a child for a year for $180. See the display for details.
In addition, there is a special Advent Project that involves donating the price of our drinks at fast food places. The money collected will be sent to St. Jude Academy for containers to collect fresh water during the rainy season (imagine that--fresh water not readily available!) The Newman Students have made an attractive but huge soft drink cup to receive the donations.

ADVENT PRAYERS FOR PEACE
Join the members of Pax Christi in a worldwide noontime prayer for peace during the days of Advent. Spend 5 minutes at noon (or any convenient time of day) praying for peace during this holy season. Cards with prayers for each day of the week will be available in the gathering space.

Triumph of the Cross update
The diocese has made an important announcement about the building of the new cathedral. There will be some delay but the project will eventually go forward. We have some copies of the press release at the bulletin boards. Visit our web site for information as well.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS
This movie is generating some controversy. To sum up: it is not a movie recommended for our children or families. To check for yourself, please log onto the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (
www.usccb.org) and click on news, reviews, etc., then go to movie reviews and check out the review. You can see USCCB’s reviews for movies currently showing and for movies that have been released to video and DVD. You can also go to the CTK library and check out the current issue of Our Sunday Visitor for the cover story and review of this movie.
GIVING TREE
Happily all of this year’s Giving Tree tags providing area families in need with food baskets and gifts have been taken by members of our parish. However, we couldn’t find donor tags for Tisha ID# 11, Jeremy ID# 16, and Abby ID# 24. If you chose one of these Giving Tree recipients, please call the Parish Office: 592-2711.
If you didn’t have a chance to select a Giving Tree tag this year, there are many area families still in need of Christmas gifts. Please visit the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space, and help some of our neighbors in need by choosing a gift stocking for recipients provided by the Salvation Army.
Please drop off all your Giving Tree gifts in the Parish Center TV Room before noon on Sunday, December 9.
