Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 8/9, 2007

John the Baptist calls the people to repent. What place does repenting have in your Advent?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 3:1-12): John the Baptist was one of those preachers who did not mind stepping on people’s toes, even those of the rich and powerful. His mission was to get people to repent and be baptized before the Messiah arrived. John warns the religious leaders of his time that they must produce good fruit as proof of their conversion.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
John the Baptist seems to be a believer in the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” He tells the religious leaders of his day, “Give some evidence that you mean to reform.” John wanted everyone to be ready for the Messiah: no excuses!

How are you getting ready for the Messiah? Are your actions of justice, peace, and love speaking loud and clear as you prepare for Christmas? Are you really a follower of Christ or are you just jumping on the Advent-Christmas bandwagon? Take a few quiet moments and ask Saint John the Baptist to suggest something just, peaceful, and loving that you could do to prepare to celebrate Christmas as a true follower of Christ. Give some evidence that you mean to be ready!

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Second Sunday of Advent

In today's first reading the prophet Isaiah describes the true and faithful king of God's people, who we have come to know is the Lord Jesus

Adults: What can I do this Advent to make Jesus better known to others?

Children: How can I treat my friends so that they come to know Jesus better?

BLESSING FOR AN ADVENT WREATH

Blessed are you, our God, Creator of myriad stars that twinkle in the dark of Advent nights And the blaze of color that heralds the dawn of Advent days.
Blessed are you who have given us this evergreen crown to adorn with glowing candles.
As we watch and pray around this Advent wreath, set our souls ablaze with the justice announced by your prophets. Fill our hearts with the fire of love kindled by the coming of the world’s true Light, Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever.
Amen.

A BLESSING FOR A CHRISTMAS TREE
Blessed are you, our God, cultivator of every living thing that blossoms from the earth, producing fruits and flowers and seed.

Blessed are you who have given us this Christmas tree to decorate with lively signs of joy.

As we celebrate around this tree, cheer our hears with memories of paradise past, with dreams of the peaceable kingdom yet to come, and keep before our eyes the glorious cross that has blossomed with the flower of holiness and healing – Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

LITURGY BITS & BYTES
Both the bread and the wine are food items that require not only the harvest from the earth, but also human effort to produce. They both also require a blend of many grains of wheat or grapes which are crushed to make the final product. These are fitting elements to become the Body of Christ, broken for us, and the Blood of Christ, poured out for us. Copyright © 2007 Resource Publications
