Statement for Triumph of the Cross Cathedral
THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 15/16, 2007
GAUDETE SUNDAY

Whom does the Lord ask you to welcome as Christmas approaches?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 11:2-11): When he wants to assure John the Baptist that he truly is the Messiah, Jesus quotes passages from the book of Isaiah. These passages picture the time of the Messiah as marked by the same kind of works that Jesus is doing. Jesus heals the blind, the lame, the deaf, and the lepers. He raises the dead and proclaims the good news to the poor. These loving deeds are proof of his identity.
Because John has opened people’s hearts to the Savior’s coming, Jesus says that John is the greatest of the prophets. We, too, can be like John, and as Jesus said, even greater than John, when we share Jesus’ mission of making God’s kingdom come.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
In our American culture, we have all kinds of heroes. We have sports heroes. We have movie stars and TV stars. We might even say we have pretend heroes and real-life heroes. The people of Jesus’ time were looking for heroes, too. So they asked Jesus, “Are you the real one?” The Gospel lists some actions of Jesus, the actions of a real-life hero. What are the actions you look for in a real-life hero? How are these actions like the actions of Jesus?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Third Sunday of Advent
Gaudete Sunday

Today’s first and third readings proclaim the blessings of joy and gladness that flow from the gift of our salvation in Christ, the Savior and Messiah.

Adults: What is the source of my Christmas joy? How will I share that joy with my family, friends, and perhaps the cashier at a store checkout?

Children: What am I doing to get ready to celebrate Christmas?

A BLESSING FOR A NATIVITY SCENE
Blessed are you, our God, Shelter from wintry winds And stormy nights,
The builder of warm And welcoming hearths
And homes whose doors are open wide to all.

Blessed are you,
Who have given us this nativity scene
To set before our eyes the image of your Word,
Who became flesh and made his home among us.

As we look upon this Holy Family,
Renew our affection for those near and dear to us,
And stir our hearts to lively concern for all in need
In whom you show us the living image of your Son,
Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever.
Amen.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER MEMORIALS
We are accepting donations and memorials for Christmas flowers. Please send in your donations no later than December 19 for inclusion in the bulletin.

CHRISTMAS SYMBOLS
“The Word became Flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we have seen His glory: The glory of an only Son coming from the Father, filled with enduring love.” –John 1:14
* The Lights of Christmas
~~ The most obvious symbol of Christmas is lights: Christmas candles, window lights, luminaries, lights on the Advent Wreath and Christmas tree. All signifying that Jesus Christ is the Light of the World.
* Christmas Candle ~~ The Christmas candle is an ancient tradition. It is usually placed in the center of the Advent Wreath to complete the removal of darkness and sin by the coming of Christ.
* Window lights ~~ Lights placed inside window sills depict a beacon to light the way for Mary, Joseph and the coming of the Christ Child.

LITURGY BITS & BYTES
Before the presider says the prayer over the wine, he (or the deacon, if one is present) adds a little bit of water to it. This originates from the ancient days in Israel where it was the tradition always to add water to the wine to dilute it, because of its strength. Through the years, other symbolic meanings have been attributed to this action, such as the blending of Christ’s human and divine natures. Originally, however, it was simply a practical matter.

During October, 38 cards were used and the amount earned was 526.40. In November, 114 parishioners used their cards and the Religious Education Program received a check for $1,124.77. That is terrific! Please continue to support this program. If you do not have a card to use please contact Cathy Bruggeman at CTK.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS
This movie is generating some controversy. To sum up: it is not a movie recommended for our children or families. To check for yourself, go to the CTK library to check out the current issue of Our Sunday Visitor for the cover story and review of this movie. The review from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has been pulled with no explanation, but most movies can be reviewed on their website:
