- Statement for Triumph
of the Cross Cathedral
- FEAST OF THE HOLY
FAMILY OF
- JESUS, MARY &
JOSEPH
- December 29/30,
2007
-
- Which family in your parish or neighborhood
needs encouragement or comfort from your family during this season?
-
- Gospel Reflection (Matthew 2:15-13,
19-23): Today it is common for families to
move many times. So we can imagine how Joseph felt when an angel
suddenly warned him to pack up his family and move to Egypt.
But Joseph did not argue or complain. He listened, and out of
love he obeyed Gods will. Then, when danger was past, God
called the Holy Family out of exile. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
finally had a permanent home in Nazareth.
Discussion Points for Gospel: The
word obedience comes from a Latin word meaning, to listen.
Some of us have developed what is called selective hearing.
We select, or choose, what we want to hear. When God (who is
working through our parents and others in authority) says, Go
on vacation, or Take a ride together and stop for
ice cream, we listen! At other times, it might be harder
to listen to God and to our parents. What are those times? Why
do you think listening and obeying is ha Why
do you think Joseph listened to God? What might have happened
if he had taken it easy and not bothered? Have you ever been
like Joseph and obeyed and then were very glad you did? (--Sadlier We Believe

- Sunday Scripture Readings
- Reflection on the Scriptures has become
more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times
we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but
we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may
be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately
after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with
the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture
reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday.
In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual
links to the readings.

- QUESTIONS OF THE
WEEK
- Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary & Joseph
-
- Todays Scripture challenges
us to follow the word of God despite the difficulties along the
way. We are called to build a home in love and justice for the
glory of the Lord.
Adults: How can I let the love and peace of Christ
rule my heart?
Children: What can I do today to honor my father
and mother?
- A BLESSING FOR
THE FAMILY AT THE
NEW YEAR
Eternal God, you make all things new,
Giving strength to the weak,
Hope to the despondent,
And love to the forsaken.
As we begin a new year,
We ask for your blessing upon our family.
Renew our faith and revive our hope.
Grant us patience in adversity
And gratitude for our many blessings.
Make us a blessing to one another
And to the world.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

LITURGY
BITS & BYTES
The washing of the hands began as
a practical matter. Originally it was a cleansing of the presiders
hands after he had received the various gifts from the people
given to support the poor of the community. This could have included
animals or produce from the garden. Certainly he wanted to wash
his hands before handling the food which people would be receiving
from them. Presently, it is mostly a symbolic action, unless
it follows an incensing of the gifts. The priest prays silently
at this time, Lord, wash away my iniquity; cleanse me from
my sin. Copyright ©

LIFE
The fundamental human right, the presupposition
of every other right, is the right to life itself. This is true
of life from the moment of conception until its natural end.
Abortion, consequently, cannot be a human right -- it is the
very opposite. It is a deep wound in society. In
stating this, I am not expressing a specifically ecclesial concern.
Rather, I am acting as advocate for a profoundly human need,
speaking out on behalf of those unborn children who have no voice.
