3. Education
a. we received Go and Make Disciples and Evangelization in the Modern World ; please read Part 2 for discussion in February
b. Juli gave us a summary of Part 1 of Go and Make Disciples as well as a hand out with goals, etc. & suggested we read over Part 1 for ourselves
1. what is evangelization
--bringing the Good News into every human situation & seeking
to convert individuals & society by the power of the Gospel
--inward & outward conversion is necessary
--fruits of evangelization are changed lives & a changed world
2. why we evangelize
--because we are commanded to do so
--to bring enlightenment & lift people from error
--because we have experienced the love of Christ, we want to share it
3. how evangelization happens
--witness: the simple living of the faith
--sharing: spreading Good News in an explicit way
4. who to. . .
--alienated & non-practicing Catholics
--those who don't belong to a faith community
--other Christian & non-Christian faiths
c. John discussed the goals of Go and Make Disciples (back of hand out)
1. to become so enthused about our faith that we freely share it with others
--important to have a continued & renewed formation in the faith
2. to invite all people in the U.S. to hear the message of salvation
3. to foster gospel values in our society. . .
d. Juli suggested we look at what this document asks of us, what CTK already is doing & how the two "mesh"
e. more information will be coming via e-mail on "homework"
f. more discussion at February meeting
4. Spiritual Development: parish Lenten project "Let's Do Lent Together" hand out from Fr. Marty about making Lent a community experience at CTK
--1st part of hand out is general rationale of project
--2nd part has some actual idea.a. prayer/study: Moira is working on 6-week prayer/study (includes week of Ash Wednesday) suitable for small group use; hand out with details
--there are themes for each week; incorporates weekend readings
--gifts of the Holy Spirit part of program
b. parish groups may choose other materials/programs to use
--Renew Core group has a variety of materials available
c. service
--PCSC: Sallie reported they have a variety of projects in place; how
to publicize them; Fr. Marty will meet with her to discuss this
--APAC volunteer meeting with PCSC to discuss possibilities
--APAC pamphlet lists projects available; might be able to tie
needy folks in with this program
--VDP: make delivery(ies) with volunteers
--Habitat
**need to keep in mind sense of being part of the larger community
5. Small group discussion & sharing
a. discussion
--identify project of some sort & let parish know Council is backing it
--great idea, support of small groups important
--sounds similar to past ideas, just shifting from individual to groups
--community service project is evangelization!
--time constraints might force any project to be "behind the scenes"
action rather than hands
--should be well-organized
--consider finals & spring break in planning so as to include students
--Lent is a good time to start something, why not this
--keep it simple (present just a few options rather than too many)
--what we will gain from this
b. Council agreed to develop ideas so we can present this as a Lenten project to the community.
--needs to be ready by February meeting so we can publicize it
6. Current issues
a. post-meeting communication: Sallie e-mailed feedback to group about December's meeting; remember to send feedback to Sallie
b. Bill asked how regularly lay ministers visit sick/shut-ins to distribute communion; he would like to do this
--Juli observed: having the same visitor could promote friendship &
bonding while different people visiting would have opposite effect
7. The next meeting will be Monday, February 9, 7:00 p.m.
