PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES
October 13, 2003
PRESENT: Bill Coffey, Bishop Conlon, Teri Frost, Chuck Hammer,
Fr. Marty, Bob Maher, John & Juli Miller, Moira O'Dect, Don

1. opening prayer led by Moira
2. Welcome to Bishop Conlon & introduction of Council members
3. Review of September minutes; minutes were accepted
--Council minutes & agenda will be emailed to Council members
in future
4. Selection of topic of discussion for this year (evangelization
or stewardship)
a. reviewed Council's topics of discussion in the past &
how they were acted upon --study topics, have input, develop
plan of action
b. discussed meaning of Catholic evangelization
--why be Roman Catholic
--inactive & alienated Catholics
--creating an attitude of evangelization
--evangelization & the future of mission & ministry in
the Church
Evangelization document "Go and Make Disciples" (I
992)
Goal 1: to bring about in all Catholics such an enthusiasm for
their faith that in living their faith, they freely share it
with others
Goal 2: to invite all people in U.S., whatever their social or
cultural background to hear the message of salvation in Jesus
Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic
faith
Goal 3: to foster gospel values in our society, promoting the
dignity of the human person, the importance of the family, and
the common good of our society so that our nation may continue
to be transformed by the saving power of Jesus Christ
c. identify examples of evangelization efforts already present
in CTK (Renew, Religious Ed); look at what evangelization needs
are still out there
d. some works, services & ministries of the good steward
--evangelization & witness to the gospel
--catechesis & faith formation
--parent stewardship of the domestic church
--stewardship of simplicity of life
--stewardship for the ecology of the globe
--lay witness in the marketplace & institutions
--financial accountability in personal & parochial affairs
--stewardship of collegiality & collaboration in parish life
& ministries --stewardship of social justice & work for
peace
Catholic Stewardship "Stewardship a Disciple's Response"
(I 992)
1. "Stewardship is an expression of discipleship with the
power to change how we understand and live out our lives"
2. Stewardship includes our relationship to & our response
for the gift of creation
3. Stewardship also includes the development of a spirituality
of the biblical concept of giving (time, talent, treasure) for
the sake of building up the Kingdom of God
e. identify examples of stewardship efforts already in place
at CTK; surface stewardship needs present in our parish community
3. Council broke into small groups to talk about evangelization
& stewardship
a. after discussion we came together to share results some of
which were: --a by-product of evangelization is good stewardship
--good stewardship couldlshould evolve into evangelization
--get parishioners involved & then evangelize
--witness, share your story
--active recruitment
b. Council decided to take up topic of evangelization
4. Conversation with Bishop Conlon
a. discussed importance of pastoral council: most important parish
organization even though it's not a required organization
b. what makes CTK a good parish
--leadership & accessibility to leadership
--involvement of our laity
--programs involving family
--parishioners feel they are always able to be heard
--worship
--attention to detail
--rapport & relationship with OU; uniqueness of relationship
with students --commitment to living gospel values
--challenge from leadership to live the gospel
c. what would make CTK a better parish
--more people making a commitment of time
--reach out in parish to get more people involved
--more involvement in youth programs (yet youth out & active)
--reevaluate Religious Ed program to make it grow
--Catholic education, Catholic school, work within city schools
--get more children involved in Liturgy of the Word--Good News
--hire a campus minister
d. what do we have to tell Bishop Conlon
--thanks for coming
--child protection policy is appreciated
--lots of appreciation for work he is doing in diocese &
his "visibility"
