a. unchurched: many of this in Athens & they are good people

there is a need
to share about Christ; peer-to-peer sharing is good
c. other Christians: common sharing should make it easier; feel
that positive
efforts are being made here
d. inactive Catholics: impact of marriage-related issues on
them; some of inactivity could be caused due to acceptance
of ecumenism; open to interfaith marriage

good foundation needed to keep our people
f. continue thinking about this & continue discussion later;
look at document, "Go and Make Disciples"

- NOTES ON EVANGELIZATION VIDEO,
Part 2
-
- 1. Important to note: charism of evangelizer & look at
community to be evangelized
2. Five areas of evangelization
a. active Catholics: about 55 million
--low numbers initially in early colonies
--church has grown enormously through immigrants
--early challenge was to preserve & nurture faith in hostile
environment
--now we still care for our own but also reach out to others
--rediscover shepherd of flock & fisher of people
--vibrant parish life, etc. is best way to evangelize
b. inactive/non-practicing: about 16 million adults
--40% of young people leave for 2 years or more
--ministry to inactive Catholics fairly non-existant
--converts, dropouts, returnees
--why are these people inactive
1. interfaith marriage
2. marriage-related problems: divorce, abortion/birth control;
1 in 4 in interfaith marriage will leave
Church
3. poor parish life: music, preaching, lack of vitality, lack
of services, no sense of peace & justice
4. mobility
5. change: too much, too little change in Church's positions
6. problem, real or fancied, with pastor, staff, etc.
7. size of parish: large parishes limit pastor contact with
individuals
8. anger with God for various reasons
--what can we do
1. develop theology (i.e. prodigal son, lost sheep)
2. work for parish renewal: warmth, hospitality, etc.
3. design programs so they heal the wounds/hurts
4. apologize for how Church hurts people, for our insensitivity
5. invite them to "come home"
c. Christian traditions: over 85 million
--ecumenical dialogue
--we have our baptism in common
--reunify Christian traditions
d. religious but not Christian: about 15 million
--interreligious dialogue
--harder to relate because we don't have much in common
e. unchurched: 70 million
--religion is not a priority, isn't important
--44% of people over 18 are unchurched according to Gallup
Pole
--definition: a person who voluntarily worships less than twice
a year
--they are not allowing values of religious traditions to influence
their lives
--advertising & entertainment are great influencers of
these people
--why they drift away
1. no one does anything about them; no one invites them
2. no need felt for religious activity
3. bad example from Catholics & other Christians; value
system of Catholic Church pretty strict
--design program to invite them to look around & see;
peer-to-peer ministry works well
4. Everyone in U.S. needs to hear the news about Jesus Christ;
how one evangelizes depends on which group one works with.
