SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 26/27, 2008

What reasons for hope does faith give you?

Gospel Reflection (John 14:15-21): Several words in today’s reading are so important that we should repeat them to ourselves often: “Obey the commands I give you.” Jesus knows how difficult this would be for us if we had to do it all alone. So he gives us a Helper, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit living and working in us enables us to put the teaching of Jesus into action.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus promised to send the Spirit of truth and love to us. Where do you find truth and love in your life? There you will find the Holy Spirit. When is truth and love fun and exciting? When is truth and love hard and difficult? (--Sadlier “We Believe” www.webelieve.web.com)

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Sixth Sunday of Easter

Jesus promised his followers that they would always experience the abiding presence of the Blessed Trinity -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Adults: In what ways am I most aware of God’s presence in my life? How open am I to that presence?

Children: When I am feeling alone, do I remember that God is with me and that I can talk to him in my heart?

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
This weekend’s special collection is the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. It supports missions here in the United States.
This Appeal is a concrete way for our parish to share its faith and resources with the mission Church here at home. Over 95 cents of every dollar donated to the Appeal goes directly to the missions to keep church doors open, to support pastors in their priestly ministry, and to provide basic pastoral services like religious education for children.
Please give generously today to assist fellow Catholics here in America. It’s one practical way that our parish community can be good stewards of God’s gifts and make a difference.
Use the envelopes in your collection packet or those located at the bulletin boards in church. For more information, please visit the web site at
www.usccb.org/hm
DPSC PROGRESS REPORT
To date $24,256 has been pledged by our parishioners; 20 have pledges $500 or more.
This has been a wonderful response from the parish. As more pledges are returned to the parish, we will easily meet the diocesan goal of $25,596. But our parish goal remains: that each family, as an expression of solidarity, make an appropriate pledge in faith to the DPSC. Those amounts collected in excess of the goal will be returned to the parish without assessment for our own parish use.
“Whatever your work is, put your heart into it. . . . It is Christ the Lord you are serving.”

UPDATE ON THE HABITAT PROJECT
Check out the “Habitat House” in the Gathering Space for a visual display of our progress towards meeting our $3,000 goal for the Faith Build Coalition. So far, we’ve raised $2,014!
This project continues through Pentecost Sunday as part of our Easter season celebration. May you experience the joy of the Resurrected Christ in your life.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
The Our Father is a dangerous prayer. If we listen carefully to what we say, it truly challenges us. We pray for God’s kingdom to come. Jesus personified the kingdom of God in his perfect obedience. This is a scary thing to pray for. We pray that God’s will be done. If we say that honestly, we are letting go of our own will in favor of God’s will. Jesus did this in the Garden of Gethsemene. Again, this is a scary thing to pray for. Maybe we hold each other’s hands at this time to give one another mutual support for this very challenging act of obedience.
